The doors closed behind them. Not with a slam. With a whisper. A soft scrape of ancient stone meeting ancient stone. Aurora turned. The library was gone. Not destroyed. Simply sealed away. Beyond the doors, the blue lanterns continued to burn, but their light could no longer reach the corridor. Aurora looked ahead. The woman in white walked several yards before them. Caelum followed her. Lucien remained beside Aurora. Behind them came the others. Gideon first, sword in hand. Elara beside their mother. Darian carrying the torch. The survivors moved carefully together, afraid that even a whisper might awaken something hidden in the darkness.
Aurora looked down. The floor beneath them was covered with shallow carvings. Names. Hundreds of them. Some had been scratched away. Others remained perfectly preserved. She recognized one. Ashbourne. Then another. Ashbourne. Another. Ashbourne. Generation after generation. The family had not simply guarded the Binding. They had been recorded here. Aurora stopped. "Wait." Everyone halted. She knelt. Her fingers moved over the nearest inscription. Evelyn Ashbourne. Below it: Bound. Then another name. Mara Ashbourne. Bound. Then another. Elian Ashbourne. Bound. The word repeated again and again. Bound. Bound. Bound. Aurora's stomach tightened. "Why does it say this?" The woman in white stopped ahead. She turned. "The Archive recorded those who carried the burden." Aurora stood. "Burden?" Her voice hardened. "You called it a choice." "It was." "Then why were they all marked as bound?" The woman's expression saddened. "Because humans often confuse devotion with imprisonment."
Aurora didn't like the answer. Neither did her mother. She stepped forward. "How many?" The woman looked toward the endless corridor. "Every Ashbourne who accepted the Veil." Their mother went pale. "Every one?" "Every one." Silence. Elara slowly looked at Aurora. "Then all those stories..." "They were true," Darian whispered. The stories their family had dismissed as legends. The warnings. The rituals. The disappearances. The strange rules surrounding the Veil. All of them had been fragments of something much larger. Aurora looked at the woman. "Why didn't anyone tell us?" "Because the truth became dangerous." Caelum stopped walking. His voice came from the darkness. "No." Everyone looked at him. He turned slowly. "The truth became inconvenient." The woman stared at him. For several seconds, neither moved. Lucien sighed. "Not here." Caelum's eyes remained fixed upon her. "Where then?" "Not before them." He gestured toward the survivors. "They deserve to know." The woman's gaze moved across the frightened people. She studied every face. The wounded. The exhausted. The children. The families who had lost homes, relatives, entire lives. "You are right." She stepped aside. The corridor widened. Beyond it was a vast chamber.
Aurora entered first. Her breath caught. The walls were covered in paintings. Not crude drawings. Entire scenes. The history of the Binding. The first Ashbourne standing beneath a blood-red moon. The Veil glowing in her hands. Caelum standing across from her. Lucien behind them. Then armies. Thousands of people kneeling. A city burning. The Binding being formed. Aurora moved from painting to painting. Her heartbeat grew faster. "This..." She stopped. One painting showed the First Ashbourne holding the Veil against Caelum. But Caelum wasn't attacking her. He was reaching for her. Their hands were almost touching. Between them floated a black object shaped like a heart. Aurora frowned. "What is that?" The woman didn't answer. Caelum did. "The reason I became what you fear." Aurora turned. His expression was cold again. But beneath it... pain. "What happened?" Caelum looked at the painting. "I was given a choice." Aurora waited. "What choice?" He looked directly at her. "To be bound..." His gaze shifted toward the woman. "...or to become the thing the Binding was created to contain." A murmur moved through the survivors. Gideon tightened his grip on his sword. "So you chose?" Caelum smiled faintly. "I survived." The answer chilled Aurora.
The woman stepped closer to the painting. "You left out the important part." Caelum's smile disappeared. She touched the painted image. "The Binding did not contain Caelum." Aurora's breath stopped. "Then what did it contain?" The woman looked at her. "His choice." The chamber fell silent. Aurora didn't understand. Not yet. The woman continued. "Caelum was never the creature the first generations feared." Caelum looked away. "But his anger became one." The words struck harder than Aurora expected. She looked at him. The horror she'd seen. The blood. The destruction. The way he had smiled while Hollow Vale burned. "You became this." Caelum didn't deny it. "I did." Lucien stepped forward. "Because of her?" Caelum's eyes flashed. "Don't." Lucien stopped. Caelum's voice dropped. "Don't make my choices her fault." The woman looked at him. Something passed between them. Something Aurora couldn't understand.
Then the ground shook. Hard. The survivors stumbled. Gideon caught Elara before she fell. A crack appeared across the painted wall. Then another. The entire chamber trembled. The woman looked toward the far end. "We have stayed too long." Aurora felt the Veil burn. "What's happening?" "The Binding is opening." "But we just opened the doors." "No." The woman's expression became serious. "We opened the first door." A deep metallic sound echoed beneath them. CLANG. Everyone froze. Another. CLANG. Then another. CLANG. Three enormous locks somewhere beneath the chamber released. The floor began separating. A circular section of stone descended slowly into the earth. Revealing a staircase. Not upward. Downward. Deeper. Far deeper than the city. Cold air rushed upward. The torch in Darian's hand went out. The survivors backed away. Aurora stared into the darkness. "There's another level." Lucien's expression hardened. "Yes." "What's down there?" This time... Caelum answered. "The place where the first oath was broken." The woman closed her eyes. Aurora looked at her. "You knew this would happen." "I knew one day you would reach it." "And you still brought us here." The woman opened her eyes. "Because you cannot destroy what you refuse to understand."
Aurora stepped toward the staircase. The darkness below seemed endless. Then something moved far beneath them. Not a creature. A shadow. A human silhouette standing impossibly far below. Aurora stared. The figure slowly raised its head. The Veil screamed against her skin. The woman beside her whispered: "Now..." Her voice was almost lost beneath the rumbling earth. "...you will see what we buried." And Caelum began descending.
