Chapter 78 - The Throne of Chains

The voice came from the throne. Caelum's voice. But it wasn't Caelum. Not the man standing before them. This voice carried something ancient beneath it rage stripped of restraint, pain stripped of reason. "You should never have come back." The words rolled through the chamber. Every survivor froze. Aurora stared at the throne. The golden light above it pulsed once. Then again. Caelum did not move. Lucien stepped toward his brother. "Caelum." "Don't." The answer came immediately. Cold. Sharp. Final. Lucien stopped. Aurora looked between them. "What is that?" Caelum's eyes remained fixed on the throne. "An echo." "Of you?" "Of what I was." Another pulse of golden light. The chains around the throne began dragging themselves across the floor. Clink. Clink. Clink. They moved toward Caelum. He stepped backward. The first chain struck the ground where his foot had been. The impact shattered the stone. Aurora's breath caught. Caelum looked down at the crater. His expression darkened. "Interesting." The second chain shot toward him. This time he caught it. His hand closed around the ancient metal. The chain immediately wrapped around his wrist. Caelum pulled. The entire chamber shook. For the first time, the force behind him was strong enough to make him stagger. Gideon raised his sword. "Should we help him?" Lucien answered without taking his eyes off the struggle. "No." Gideon frowned. "He's going to be killed." Lucien's voice became grim. "That throne cannot kill Caelum." The chain tightened. Caelum's fingers began bleeding. "But it can remind him." Aurora understood. This wasn't an attack. It was punishment. Memory made physical.

Caelum suddenly released the chain. It snapped backward and struck the throne. The golden light exploded. The chamber filled with a deafening roar. Every survivor dropped to the floor. Aurora fell onto one hand. The Veil flared across her chest. A vision tore through her. She was no longer in the underground hall. She stood in the ancient city. But everything was burning. The sky was black. The streets were filled with bodies. And in the center of the destruction stood Caelum. Not as he was now. Younger. Furious. Blood covered his hands. The woman in white stood several yards away. Lucien was between them. Aurora heard the woman's voice. "Stop." Caelum laughed. "You still think I can?" "You can." "No." He looked around at the burning city. "Look what your Binding created." The woman didn't answer. Caelum pointed toward the dead. "You wanted to save them." His voice cracked. "Look at them." The vision shifted. Aurora saw people trapped beneath burning buildings. Children. Families. The same city that had once been beautiful. Destroyed. Caelum's eyes were wet with fury. "You bound me to the thing you were trying to destroy." The woman stepped closer. "I bound your power." "You bound my life." "No." Her voice remained calm. "I bound your choice." Caelum's expression twisted. "What's the difference?" She looked at him sadly. "Everything." The vision shattered. Aurora returned to the chamber. She gasped. The Veil burned so intensely she grabbed her chest. Caelum was staring at her. "You saw it." Aurora nodded slowly. "Yes." He looked away. "Then you understand." "I understand that you suffered." His golden eyes snapped back to hers. "Don't." Aurora didn't retreat. "But suffering doesn't excuse what you did." The chamber became silent. Lucien looked at Aurora. The woman watched Caelum. Even the survivors seemed to understand that something important had shifted. Caelum slowly smiled. Not the cruel smile they knew. Something quieter. "You sound like her." Aurora frowned. "I don't know whether that's an insult." "It isn't."

The throne suddenly pulsed again. This time the golden light spread across the entire chamber. The ancient chains rose into the air. One wrapped around the throne. Another crossed the ceiling. Another disappeared into the darkness behind the walls. Aurora looked upward. "There are more." Lucien nodded. "The throne was only the center." "Center of what?" "The original Binding." The woman stepped toward the throne. Aurora noticed something carved into its base. Three symbols. The same three symbols from the Oath Chamber. Bind. Guard. Remember. But beneath them was a fourth. A symbol Aurora had never seen. A circle divided by a single vertical line. "What does that mean?" The woman looked at it. Her expression changed. "It means the Binding was never complete." Aurora's stomach tightened. "Then what have we been protecting all these generations?" The woman turned toward her. "Half of a promise." A tremor shook the chamber. The survivors cried out. Gideon immediately moved among them. "Stay together!" Elara pulled two children behind her. Their mother began counting again. "Thirty-two." She looked around. "Everyone is here." Darian stared at the throne. "No." Aurora looked at him. He pointed toward the far wall. "We're not alone." Everyone turned. A series of ancient doors had appeared where there had been nothing before. One. Two. Three. Four. Five. Each door bore a different Ashbourne name. Gideon approached the nearest. "These are family names." Aurora followed him. The first door read: ASHBOURNE THE FIRST BINDING. The second: ASHBOURNE THE SECOND WATCH. The third: ASHBOURNE THE THIRD WITNESS. The fourth... Aurora stopped. Her blood went cold. The name had not been carved yet. It was empty. Waiting. The Veil pulsed. The empty door began writing. Letters slowly appeared in the ancient stone. AURORA ASHBOURNE. She stepped backward. "No." The stone finished carving her name. A deep metallic sound echoed through the chamber. Clang. The throne answered. Clang. The chains answered. Clang. The entire buried city seemed to hear her name. Caelum looked at the door. His expression became unreadable. Lucien whispered, "That's impossible." Aurora stared at him. "What?" "Your name wasn't supposed to be here." "Why?" The woman approached the door. Her fingers traced Aurora's name. She looked troubled. "Because this chamber records those who have already made their choice." Aurora's heartbeat accelerated. "But I haven't chosen anything." The woman looked directly into her eyes. "That's what frightens me."

Before Aurora could respond the empty fourth door opened. Not inward. Outward. The stone itself dissolved into darkness. Beyond it was a narrow corridor illuminated by silver flames. At the end stood another door. This one was different. No carvings. No names. Only a handprint. Aurora stared at it. The Veil pulled toward it. Not physically. Emotionally. Like something inside her recognized where it needed to go. Caelum moved toward the corridor. Aurora blocked him. "No." He stopped. She raised the Veil. "You've been ahead of us this entire time." Her voice shook with anger. "You knew about this place." "Yes." "You knew about the throne." "Yes." "You knew my name would appear." Caelum's expression changed. "No." Aurora narrowed her eyes. "You're lying." "I expected the chamber to reject you." He glanced toward the carved name. "I did not expect it to claim you." The words sent a chill through everyone. Aurora turned toward the woman. "Claim me for what?" The woman didn't answer. Instead, she looked at Caelum. And for the first time since her manifestation... there was fear in her eyes. Not fear of Caelum. Fear for Aurora. "Because," she whispered, "the fourth door was never supposed to exist." The silver flames suddenly went out. The corridor became completely dark. Then the Veil whispered inside Aurora's mind. Not in a voice. In a memory. A memory she had never lived. A little girl standing before the ancient throne. A woman in white kneeling before her. And Caelum... not as a monster. Not as a prisoner. But as a man kneeling beside them. All three holding hands. Aurora's breath caught. The vision vanished. She stared into the darkness. Then a single silver flame returned. At the far end of the corridor. And beside it... a shadow slowly appeared. The First Ashbourne looked toward Aurora. This time, there was no sorrow in her expression. There was urgency. "Do not open that door." Aurora stared at her. "Why?" The woman looked toward Caelum. Then toward Lucien. Finally, back to Aurora. "Because the moment you do..." Her voice dropped to a whisper. "...the Binding will no longer belong to us." The fourth door began to open. And the entire mountain screamed.
