Chapter 16 - Chapter 16: Almost

I left work later than usual.

Not because I had more to do.

Because I didn't want to sit alone with my thoughts yet.

The office had emptied out gradually, one person at a time, until the quiet felt too noticeable to ignore.

By the time I shut down my computer, only a few lights remained on.

Daniel's absence felt less sharp now.

Not gone.

Just… absorbed into the routine.

That unsettled me more than anything else.

"You are thinking about him less," the warmth said.

"I'm trying to function."

"That is not the same thing."

"No."

It wasn't.

~

The hallway outside the office was dim.

Most of the building had already switched to evening lighting—softer, lower, quieter.

My footsteps echoed faintly against the tile floor as I walked toward the exit.

The warmth stayed close.

Not tense.

Just aware.

"He may be outside again," it said.

"I doubt it."

"You doubted it before."

I exhaled slowly.

"That was different."

"How?"

"He was alive then."

The warmth didn't respond to that.

~

The parking lot was nearly empty.

A few scattered cars.

Long shadows stretching across the pavement under the dim lights.

For a moment, I just stood there.

Listening.

Watching.

Waiting.

Nothing.

No movement.

No presence.

Just wind brushing lightly across the asphalt.

"You are checking," the warmth said.

"Yes."

"You expect him to be here."

"I don't know what I expect anymore."

~

"Hey."

The voice came from behind me.

Calm.

Familiar.

I turned.

Adrian Vale stood a few steps away.

Not close.

Not far.

Just… there.

"You have a habit of appearing unexpectedly," I said.

"I could say the same about you."

"That doesn't make sense."

"It does from my perspective."

I frowned slightly.

"That's concerning."

A small smile touched his mouth.

"Fair."

~

He didn't step closer.

Didn't close the distance.

Just stayed where he was.

Same pattern.

Same careful control over space.

The warmth noticed immediately.

"He keeps distance."

"Yes."

"He is different."

"I know."

~

"What are you still doing here?" I asked.

"Following up on a few things."

"At night?"

"Sometimes that's when people are most honest."

"That sounds ominous."

"It's not meant to be."

A pause settled between us.

Not uncomfortable.

Just… present.

~

"You don't seem afraid of this place," Adrian said after a moment.

"The parking lot?"

"Yes."

"I don't see a reason to be."

"Most people would."

"I'm not most people."

"No," he said quietly.

"You're not."

The warmth shifted beneath my ribs.

"He is studying you again."

"I noticed."

~

Adrian glanced toward the far end of the lot.

Then back at me.

"Can I ask you something?" he said.

"You're going to anyway."

"That's true."

I crossed my arms lightly.

"Go ahead."

He hesitated.

Just briefly.

"Have you ever felt like something was…off…about that night?"

The question landed carefully.

Like he knew it could.

I held his gaze.

"That's a vague question."

"I can be more specific."

"Try."

"Did anything happen that you haven't told me about?"

The warmth stirred.

"You could answer truthfully."

"No," I thought.

~

I considered the question for a moment.

Then shook my head.

"No."

Adrian didn't react immediately.

Just watched me.

Quiet.

Measuring.

"You're very consistent," he said finally.

"Isn't that a good thing?"

"Sometimes."

~

The wind picked up slightly.

Cool air brushed against my arms.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then Adrian stepped a little closer.

Not enough to crowd.

Just enough to shift the space between us.

"You know," he said, "most people in your position would avoid this place."

"I don't see the point in that."

"Because something bad happened here."

"Bad things happen everywhere."

"That's true."

His voice softened slightly.

"But not always this close to home."

~

I didn't answer.

Because I didn't know what to say to that.

The warmth pulsed gently.

"You are calmer with him."

"That doesn't mean anything."

"It means something."

~

Adrian studied me for another moment.

Then said something unexpected.

"You handled Daniel better than most people would have."

My chest tightened slightly.

"That's not exactly how I'd describe it."

"You set boundaries."

"He ignored them."

"Yes."

"And then he died."

The words sat between us.

Heavy.

Unavoidable.

Adrian didn't look away.

"Sometimes people don't listen until it's too late," he said quietly.

The warmth reacted.

Sharp.

"He is assigning meaning."

"I hear it."

~

I shifted my weight slightly.

The air felt colder now.

Or maybe that was just me.

"You keep circling the same question," I said.

"That's because I don't have an answer yet."

"And you think I do."

"I think you experienced something important."

"That doesn't mean I understand it."

"No," he agreed.

"It doesn't."

~

Another pause.

Longer this time.

More fragile.

Adrian took a slow breath.

Then said something softer.

"You don't have to carry everything by yourself."

The words hit differently than they should have.

Not like a question.

Not like part of an investigation.

Just… an offer.

The warmth reacted immediately.

"He is offering connection."

"I can see that."

~

Adrian's hand moved slightly.

Not toward me.

Just… closer.

Resting against the side of his leg.

But the space between us had shifted.

Narrowed.

Not forced.

Just… different.

For a brief second, I imagined what it would feel like if he reached out.

If he touched my hand.

The thought came uninvited.

Quick.

Sharp.

The warmth noticed instantly.

"You are thinking about contact."

My chest tightened.

"I'm not—"

"You are."

~

Adrian didn't move any closer.

Didn't reach out.

Didn't cross that line.

He just stood there.

Waiting.

Like the choice wasn't his to make.

And somehow—

That made it worse.

Because it meant the distance between us wasn't something he was imposing.

It was something I was maintaining.

~

The moment stretched.

Thin.

Delicate.

I could feel it.

That small shift.

That possibility.

Then the warmth moved.

Subtle.

But undeniable.

Not forceful.

Not aggressive.

Just… present.

Closer.

A quiet pressure beneath my ribs.

"You do not need that," it said softly.

My breath caught slightly.

"I didn't say I did."

"You thought it."

"That's not the same thing."

"It is enough."

~

I stepped back.

Just one step.

But it broke the moment completely.

The space between us returned.

Clear.

Defined.

Adrian noticed.

Of course he did.

But he didn't comment on it.

Didn't question it.

He just nodded slightly.

Like he understood something he wasn't going to say out loud.

~

"I should get going," I said.

"That's probably a good idea."

Neither of us moved right away.

Then Adrian stepped back first.

Restoring the distance fully.

"If you need anything," he said, "you have my number."

"I know."

A pause.

"Use it," he added.

~

I turned and walked toward my car.

The warmth stayed close.

Quiet.

Watching.

When I reached the door, I stopped for a moment.

"You did that," I said internally.

"Yes."

"You pushed me away from him."

"I reminded you."

"That's not the same thing."

"It is enough."

~

I got into the car and closed the door.

The silence inside felt heavier than usual.

Through the windshield, I could see Adrian still standing where I left him.

Watching.

Not following.

Not calling out.

Just… there.

"He will not force closeness," the warmth said.

"No."

"That makes him different."

"Yes."

A pause.

Then, softer:

"Do you prefer that?"

My hands tightened slightly on the steering wheel.

I didn't answer.

Because the truth sat somewhere uncomfortable between yes and no.

And I wasn't ready to look at it yet.
