Chapter 3 - Rehab

Weeks passed as I went through my father's library trying to get an idea that could change O.E.C for the better. I am feeling much better now, and I've been attending Rehab, but my legs don't seem to be coming back. In the back of my mind, I accepted the reality that my legs may never come back to normal. But daily visits to the rehabilitation center help strengthen me mentally. I was done feeling sorry for myself. I begged Kelvin to teach me boxing. He was reluctant at first for obvious reasons, but seeing how eager I was and how much I had healed, he decided to do it. We got a punching bag, lowering it to my wheelchair height as he taught me the basics.

So You Have to Know How To Throw A Punch First, Now You're Going to Wrap Your thumb Around Your Other Fingers While Clinching Them To The Point You Don't See Your Fingernails Making A Fist. I Did That And I Could Feel The Strength In my hands As I Started Punching The Bag, But It Didn't Move When I Was Done Fooling Myself. Kelvin Held His Face Holding Back Laughter As I Bury My Shame In My Hands. You're Doing It All Wrong, he said. You Have To Build Your Energy From Below And Take It Up Exploding. He Said That And Continued Showing Me An Example. He Bend His Knees, Built Energy And Punched The Bag. It Sprang Forward And Started Dangling. I Was Dumbfounded, You Did That With One Punch. What The Hell, I mean you're built like the Hulk, so I'm not surprised, but Sheesh, you're really strong my dude. He Gave Me Some Few Pointers. Your Legs Are Currently Offline, So You Got to Try Building Energy From Your Waist Up. Though It Wouldn't Be Your Full Strength, You Can Fine Tone It Into Perfection.

Little By Little, I Keep Getting The Hang Of It Till I Could Eventually Make The Bag Move Now From My Punches. For A Brief Moment, I Was Actually Happy. I Threw One Punch Straight To The Bag And It Swung. Kelvin Caught It From The Other Side Grinning From Ear To Ear. Good Job Fella. Now Go Shower Up. It's Time For Rehab And We Don't Want to Be Late. A Wave Of Sadness Hit Me Again As Every Gloom Of Hope Erased From My Face. Kelvin Observed This And Asked. Tega What's The Matter? I Gasped And Told Him: These People Want to Take My Father's Company From Me And I'm Not Even Close To Getting A Good Product Idea To Prove My Worth. I'm Frustrated. I Just Can't Let My Dad's Sacrifice Be In Vain. I want to Revolutionalise the company, changing every bit of it for the better. Kelvin folded his arms, thinking till he snapped out and smirked, snapping his fingers. I have an idea, he said. Go on, tell me, I responded. Kelvin opened up his phone, showing me a website with tons of young scientists and their resumes. I saw something captivating as I grabbed the phone: a guy making a solution that can turn things to gold, a girl creating prosthetics that can blend perfectly well with limbs that were missing, and a young lad who's in the process of making a giant mech suit out of spare parts.

This inspired me so much, and I felt terrible for not taking my astronaut suit project seriously. I had all the resources but here I was stuck in a wheelchair. I made up my mind that once I returned from rehab I'd be working on my suit again. I asked Kelvin what the website was all about, as he told me: it's a young creatures program where young talents from all around the world showcase their talent hoping to get funding to promote it. How about recruiting a kid from here or helping fund some. It'd definitely give you good press, solidifying your stance as the company's head. What do you think? I placed my hand on my chin, then I shook my head. No, if I were to fund anyone here, it'd be a charity. I don't want any press for it as I wouldn't want to do it just for clout but for the impact it'd make on society. I responded, If there's anything these past few months that has taught me empathy and selflessness, it has to be at the top of the shelf, I said. Kelvin couldn't believe his eyes as he smiled softly, holding back tears. His once arrogant cousin is now a selfless humanitarian.

We both got ready and drove to the rehabilitation center where I underwent physical therapy as my toes responded, but it'd take quite a long while to regain my bodily functions back. I went into the therapy room as I sat there in a circle of other people as the therapist spoke. My eyes glanced at a beautiful blonde girl with a cast on her hand. She looked pretty charming and adorable and this may sound cliché, but I thought it was love at first sight. Though I haven't had any romantic interest since Crystal, who knows, this could be a blessing from God. When it finally got to her turn to speak, she introduced herself as Agnes, sharing how she got into the accident. Well, she survived some kinda explosion. I guess we had that in common.

The section was over as I moved outside, meeting Kelvin who was waiting by the car. How did the therapy section go? He asked, Pretty well, I answered as my eyes caught the glance of Agnes again. Kelvin was talking to me about our plans for the day, so I raised my hand signaling to him to hold on. I drove my wheelchair over to Agnes. She was talking to someone that appeared to be her mom, and they were about to enter their car as I approached them, greeting both of them and acting polite, but I was returned with a scornful look as Agnes snapped screaming at the top of her voice! Stay away from me, you heartless bastard! She yelled. I was shocked and, before I could ask what the issue was, she grabbed a picture from her pocket and showed it to me. It was a picture of a little boy. She continued:This is my brother. He was there with me on a school trip when your father's plant exploded, ending many lives, including his. I was lucky and so were you, but how about others that weren't so lucky? How about them! She said, as tears poured down her cheeks, Kelvin ran towards us and wanted to speak in my defense as I signaled to him not to. I never want to see you again and don't you ever I repeat ever approach me! She cried bitterly as she was comforted by her mom. I was saddened as I simply turned and went off.

On our way home, Kelvin tried comforting me. It's not your fault, he said as he grabbed my hand. You're a victim here as well. Don't feel bad, he said. I took off my glasses as my hands ran through my dreads and I put on a ponytail. I buried my face in my palm as I spoke; no matter what, I'd do everything in my power to turn O.E.C around. We won't use any harmful chemicals to make power anymore. People will be safe and so will the environment be. I'd make sure of that. Kelvin couldn't hold his smile as he felt nothing but joy as he affirmed, applauding tega on his goals and encouraging him never to stop and to persist until he fulfilled his goals.

I got home and went straight to work continuing my nano suit. Seeing kids like me with no funding inspired me to not take my advantages for granted and to work harder. I wanted to make the suit solar-powered as it wouldn't be hazardous to the environment, and the power would be sufficient. I came up with a practical design and oxygen system all night I worked, and I could actually see my idea coming into fruition. I retired for the night as I wheeled to my bedroom, turning on my computer. I went to the website shown to me by Kelvin as I searched for the girl who made prosthetics. Turns out her name is Mary Gregory, and she lives in a country not too far from ours and, despite having little to no funding, she has been helping many people recover their bodily functions again through her prosthetics. I messaged her and shockingly, she knew who I was (guess the plant incident was global news). We talked on a Zoom call for hours as she told me about her biotech ideas, and she also had many plans. I funded her research and urged her to promise me not to tell anyone I had done such, and she did. I could see the joy and happiness in her face as she jumped up on the other side of the screen. I ended the video call and went to bed. Meanwhile, in Mary's bedroom, Mary was ecstatic as she was secretly developing a chip that could help people suffering from paralysis regain their mobility again, unbeknownst to Tyler. Funding her research could potentially make him walk again.
