Chapter 5 - Hazrat Hajar (RA) life story

The life story of Hajar (Hajera RA) is one of faith, patience, sacrifice, and complete trust in Allah. She is honored in Islam as the wife of Ibrahim (Abraham, peace be upon him) and the mother of Ismail (Ishmael, peace be upon him). Her life remains a powerful example for believers across generations.

Early Life

Hajar (RA) is believed to have been originally from Egypt. According to Islamic traditions, she later became part of the household of Prophet Ibrahim (AS). She was a righteous and patient woman who had deep faith in Allah from the very beginning of her life.

When Ibrahim (AS) was old and had no children, Allah blessed him with a son through Hajar (RA). This son was Ismail (AS). The birth of Ismail (AS) was a great blessing, but it also became the beginning of a great test.

The Greatest Test: The Desert of Makkah

By the command of Allah, Prophet Ibrahim (AS) was ordered to take Hajar (RA) and their infant son Ismail (AS) to a barren desert valley. This place was later known as Mecca (Makkah). At that time, there was no water, no people, no trees—nothing but sand and mountains.

Ibrahim (AS) left them there with only a small amount of food and water. As he started to walk away, Hajar (RA) followed him and asked:

"O Ibrahim, where are you going, leaving us in this empty valley?"

He did not reply at first. Then she asked, "Has Allah commanded you to do this?"

When he answered, "Yes," she immediately said with strong faith:

"Then Allah will not let us be lost."

This sentence shows her complete trust (Tawakkul) in Allah.

The Search for Water – Safa and Marwah

After some time, their food and water finished. Baby Ismail (AS) began to cry from thirst. Seeing her child suffering, Hajar (RA) ran in search of water. She ran between two hills called Safa and Marwah seven times, hoping to find help or water.

She climbed Safa to look around. She saw nothing. She ran down and climbed Marwah. Still nothing. She did this seven times with desperation but strong hope in Allah.

This act of running between Safa and Marwah is remembered today in the ritual of Sa'i during Hajj and Umrah, performed by millions of Muslims every year.

The Miracle of Zamzam

When Hajar (RA) returned to her child, she saw that Allah had sent an angel. By Allah's command, water began to flow from the ground near baby Ismail (AS). This blessed water became known as the well of Zamzam Well.

Hajar (RA) quickly gathered the water and protected it from spreading. This water not only saved their lives but also led to the settlement of people in Makkah. Over time, Makkah became a thriving city.

Later Life and Legacy

Years later, Prophet Ibrahim (AS) returned, and together with Ismail (AS), they built the Kaaba, the sacred house of worship for Allah.

Hajar (RA)'s patience, courage, and faith became an eternal example in Islamic history. Every Muslim who performs Hajj or Umrah remembers her struggle by walking between Safa and Marwah.

Lessons from Her Life

Complete Trust in Allah – Even in the most difficult situation.

Patience in Hardship – She never complained against Allah's decision.

Motherly Sacrifice – She struggled for her child's survival.

Faith Brings Miracles – Zamzam water is a symbol of Allah's mercy.

Conclusion

The life of Hajar (RA) is not just a historical story; it is a living lesson of faith and perseverance. Her trust in Allah transformed a barren desert into the holiest city in Islam. Her struggle is remembered daily by millions of believers around the world.

May Allah be pleased with Hajar (RA) and grant us faith like hers.
