Even in the workshop, neither Julian nor Flitwick was in the mood for jokes or casual banter after the news. Still, Julian forced himself to focus on finishing the Christmas gifts.
Thankfully, he only needed to enchant four more items before Christmas. If everything went smoothly, he'd be able to laze about after tomorrow.
Today, he was finishing Flitwick's gift and making Harry's gift from scratch.
...
Flitwick's gift would be the chakram Julian had forged earlier, enchanted so it could fly under its own power and be guided by Flitwick's thoughts.
The half-goblin was a master of charms and a champion-level duelist, so Julian wanted to give him something that actually suited both titles.
A flying chakram sounded harmless until you considered what it meant in Flitwick's hands. He could cast spells while the weapon moved independently, turning a duel into a fight against two threats from different angles at once.
Julian wasn't going to enchant it in front of him, though. That would ruin the surprise when Flitwick unwrapped it on Christmas.
...
For Harry's gift, Julian began by grabbing an adamantium ingot, a mithril ingot, and a goblin silver ingot. He placed all three into the furnace at high heat, melting them together.
Flitwick furrowed his brows at the sight. He couldn't understand what looked like a wasteful action.
Julian raised his wand, aimed it at the strange liquid metal, and began to glow as he poured spirit into the wand.
"RUIMENYA CANANNA GOIANNA NUA!"
By the fire, I command you to join as one.
A white-and-gold mist drifted from the wand's tip and sank into the molten metal, and the change began immediately.
...
The three colors swirled, folding into one another. The pool shrank, condensing into a smaller puddle as the metals fused into something unified.
Julian removed it at once and poured it into an ingot mold, only temporarily.
Then, with focused transfiguration, he altered the mold into the shape of a bracelet loop and waited for the liquid metal to cool into its new form.
"What spell was that?" Flitwick asked, looking slightly shaken by what he'd just watched.
Julian shook his head, refusing to answer.
That told Flitwick this was a secret he wasn't going to learn, and the professor forced himself to accept it and focus elsewhere.
The truth was simpler than Flitwick would ever get. It wasn't some unique crafting secret.
It was ancient spellwork, using elvish rather than Latin or anything more modern.
...
Julian hadn't needed much practice to grasp the method, because of how similar it felt to his word-based forging. But each use drained his spirit reserves a bit, in addition to his magical energy.
After twenty minutes, Julian released the transfiguration on the mold. It spat out the cooled bracelet loop.
The design was simple, a solid band, but the metal itself was a dark jade green. It shimmered with raw magical potential.
Julian set it on the anvil and began channeling spirit again.
This time, the glow was different.
It was nearly blinding.
...
He wasn't planning to take his time, the way most rings demanded. Instead, he intended to force the full load of energy into the metal all at once, confident it could take it.
The air itself trembled. A draft formed inside the room, as if the workshop had suddenly become too small to contain what he was doing.
Flitwick stepped back cautiously, instincts screaming that this was dangerous.
The energy turned fierce and aggressive, but there was something protective threaded through it as well.
Then Julian slammed the hammer down onto the loop, driving the full brunt of the energy into the metal in one brutal moment.
...
A blinding flash filled the workshop.
Then it vanished, consumed by the bracelet.
The metal hummed violently for a heartbeat before going still.
"FEA ACCAR," Julian said, naming the piece in the same breath as its purpose.
Spirit of vengeance.
This bracelet was meant to pair with the protective ring Julian had given Harry for his birthday, forming both pure defense and retaliation.
