Chapter 188 - The Magnemite Swarm Absorbing Lightning

"When can we leave?"

According to information provided by Syrox, there would be localized heavy rain in the Electric Wilderness today, so the plan was pushed to tomorrow.

"Mag-neee-eee-eee."

On the day of the operation, Owen and Mr. Lee donned their insulated suits and gathered their equipment, preparing to venture into the plains.

The white insulated suit looked quite similar to a spacesuit, but it was remarkably lightweight and much more comfortable than Owen had imagined.

The back of the jacket was connected to a specialized backpack. Mr. Lee explained, "The lightning protection gear is integrated into that pack."

"The design utilizes principles derived from the Lightning Rod and Motor Drive abilities. It's much safer than a standard insulated suit. It doesn't just avoid attracting lightning; it actively repels it."

"With this on, even if you took a direct Thunderbolt from your own Magnemite, you wouldn't feel a thing. However, since the materials are extremely rare, they are only available for rent."

Owen ran his hand over the fabric in silence. It sounded impressive... but he couldn't help thinking that a certain "Pallet Town Trainer's" pajamas and rubber gloves seemed even more legendary. Or perhaps it was just that trainer's own constitution that was the real anomaly.

"Can I test it?" Owen asked.

Mr. Lee looked confused. "Test it?"

"You mean you want to let your Magnemite attack you?" Syrox chimed in from the side.

"Yeah..." Owen grinned.

"Suit yourself," Mr. Lee replied, surprised by Owen's playfulness.

"It's no problem," Syrox added. "Try it as much as you like. If the suit fails, we'll compensate you ten times the rental price. Guaranteed."

Owen felt a momentary urge to profit, but his survival instinct won out, and he suppressed the bolder thoughts. After confirming it was safe to experiment, Owen called out Magnemite.

Looking at Owen fully armored, Magnemite was initially confused. Once it heard Owen's request, it became even more bewildered.

"Mag-neee?" "Mag-neee," Owen encouraged.

Seeing his floating partner hesitate, Owen added, "You can start light..."

"Mag-neee..." Magnemite was still a bit panicked, afraid it would fry Owen and become a poor, homeless little Pokémon.

"Go for it! Be bold!" Owen commanded.

Zzzzt!!

An arc of electricity slammed into Owen without hesitation. However, Owen himself didn't even realize what had happened. The energy was completely absorbed by the suit; he didn't feel a single tingle from Magnemite's shock.

"Again."

ZZZZZT!!!

After the experiment, Owen confirmed that the suit could indeed guarantee his safety. While Magnemite's Thunderbolt wasn't at its peak yet, the fact that he felt nothing meant the attack was nowhere near the suit's tolerance limit.

Meanwhile, Eevee, who had been watching from the sidelines, had its eyes wide open. What a magical outfit... it really can ignore electricity!!

"Vee-vee!!" Eevee suddenly cried out.

Mr. Lee and Syrox turned to Owen.

Owen translated, "It says... 'get me one too.'"

Eevee nodded vigorously. Get Me One Too.jpg.

"Don't mind it," Owen said.

Previously, Eevee had told Owen not to call it out once they entered the Wilderness; it wanted to stay safely inside its Poké Ball. Clearly, Eevee truly despised lightning.

"Why do you need insulation gear if you're staying in your ball?" Owen muttered.

"Vee-vee!" Eevee pouted. It had changed its mind.

"Heh..." Syrox gave a dry laugh. "Does it need it? We do have insulation gear for Pokémon, though there's a separate fee."

"Uh..." Owen paused. Greedy. But then again, he wasn't the one paying—the Association was footing the entire bill.

Owen looked at Eevee. "If you're staying in your ball, forget it. But if you want to stay outside, I'll rent one for you."

"Vee... vee..." Eevee thought deeply before nodding. The Poké Ball was too boring; staying outside was better. Besides, it really wanted to experience that "no-feel" sensation Owen had with his suit.

"Vee!!" Eevee insisted on being outside.

Five minutes later.

Eevee stood blankly on the ground. It still had its scarf around its neck, but now its legs were bound with equipment. Syrox had strapped a yellow ring around each of its four short, brown limbs—what he called "Insulation Rings."

"Vee-vee!!" Eevee looked angrily at the rings and then at Owen's cool, full-body suit.

This is too half-hearted! It wanted a cool outfit too.

"This is enough for Pokémon. Humans and Pokémon have different constitutions, and these are more than enough to ensure you aren't harmed by the lightning," Syrox explained, finding Eevee's expressive face quite amusing.

"Just deal with it..." Owen's lip twitched.

Eevee slumped its shoulders and nodded. Magnemite, meanwhile, looked at the insulation rings with interest and let out an inquisitive beep.

"Vee!!" Eevee glared at it. If you were insulated, how would you train? Remember, the resources you're using are shared from my quota. Understand? Cherish it!

Finally, Owen, Eevee, and Magnemite set off under Mr. Lee's lead. Walking beside Mr. Lee was a Marowak twirling its bone club with high energy—Mr. Lee's Pokémon and their primary bodyguard.

The Electric Wilderness... the boundaries of the entire plain were cordoned off. Once you crossed the safety line, you were at risk of lightning strikes.

Owen realized that aside from the Spirit Realm, this was the most unique place he had ever seen.

Had you ever seen ground where arcs of electricity occasionally skipped across the surface?

Eevee immediately regretted its decision. What was I thinking, coming to this unlucky place?

"Vee... Vee!" Eevee hopped and skipped across the ground, frantically dodging the surface arcs.

"You don't actually have to dodge... those arcs have zero lethality," Mr. Lee said, looking at Eevee.

"Vee-vee!" Eevee shook its head. Must dodge. Must dodge.

"Eevee is practicing its reaction and coordination," Owen cleared his throat. "I've taught it well—it never misses an opportunity to train, even while walking. Everything can be a training tool..."

Eevee: "..." How can a trainer be this shameless...

"Mag-neee." Magnemite suddenly emitted a sound. As it flew, it felt a strange fluctuation in the air.

Rumble!!

Thunder echoed ahead. Mr. Lee checked the guidebook Syrox had given them. "There's a strike zone up ahead—the closest high-frequency lightning area. A swarm of wild Magnemite lives there."

As he spoke, the sky darkened, followed by a flash of lightning.

About a dozen Magnemite surged upward, sharing the electrical energy from a falling bolt. Under the golden light, the swarm formed a triangular formation, rotating continuously to attract the lightning.

Seeing this, Owen's Magnemite displayed a complex mix of emotions and let out a soft, low beep.
