For Lazare Bonaparte, whose mind had been operating for years under the constant threat of American intelligence agencies, stock market crashes, and complex geopolitical alliances, this disruptive element had just taken on a human form. Since the night of the Sainte-Geneviève Library and the planned downfall of the La Rochefoucauld family, Aliénor's presence in the Builder's life had subtly but profoundly altered his psychology.

The young historian wasn't judging his algorithms; she was deciphering the man. This intellectual and intimate connection acted like a heat sink on the overstimulated mind of the Ogre of Ivry.

Reassured by this new anchor, Lazare had immersed himself entirely in the theoretical development of the future VESLA-IV in 64 bits and in the structuring of his space division, releasing for the first time the pressure of tyrannical micromanagement on the other layers of his empire.

But in the Bunker's corridors, when the master's eye turns away to scan the horizon, nature reasserts itself. And at Volta SA, nature was made of audacity, silicon, and an intellectual disobedience elevated to a virtue.

Deep within Level 2, behind a secure door officially designated for storing spare parts for the old 1992 generation servers, the harsh light of a halogen lamp pierced the darkness. The place bore no resemblance to the pristine white rooms of the Alsace complex or the orderly offices of management.

It was an organic chaos, a den of wild engineering littered with boxes of cold Asian noodles, smoking soldering irons, gutted oscilloscopes, and meters of hastily braided network cables.

It was the twins' clandestine kingdom.

Minh and Linh were no longer the frail, terrified children Lazare and Karim had rescued from the squalor and violence of the streets of Da Nang seven years earlier. They had become sharp-witted seventeen-year-olds, their exceptional minds molded, forged, and programmed within the matrix of the world's most ruthless corporation.

They spent their days in the halls of prestigious Parisian engineering schools to meet the academic requirements of the Republic, but their true doctorates were being written at night, in the bowels of Ivry-sur-Seine.

Karim Belkacem, the technical director and chief software architect, wandered the deserted corridors. His eyes red from yet another debugging session on the VoltaOS X kernel , his tie loosened, he was looking for a working coffee machine.

As he passed the storage room, his keen hearing picked up the characteristic crackle of an electrical arc on a circuit board and the frantic clatter of a solid mechanical keyboard.

He pushed open the sturdy door, which was not locked from the inside.

Minh, equipped with thick precision magnifying glasses, was leaning over a test station. Attached to the motherboard of a disassembled Volta workstation, a BBI-96 daughterboard, heavily modified by him, shone under the beam of the lamp.

A meter away from him, his sister Linh typed lines of hexadecimal code on a UNIX terminal with a speed that would have made any senior engineer in the software division dizzy.

« What are you doing here at this hour? » Karim sighed, leaning against the doorframe, too tired to assert his authority. « Lazare will kill me if he finds out I'm letting you hack into the factory equipment instead of making you sleep before your classes. »

The twins did not flinch. Karim's intrusion into their sanctuary did not seem to alarm them.

« We're not hacking, Karim. We're correcting a structural anomaly, » replied Minh without looking up from his soldering iron, the tip of his soldering iron melting a drop of tin onto a microscopic pin.

The teenager put down his tool, wiped the tip on a damp sponge, and pointed to the girl card.

SONG-III blueprints from 1991," Minh explained with a disarming pragmatism that was chillingly reminiscent of Lazarus's cold, analytical demeanor. « Back then, it was an excellent chip. It handled 2D, VoltaOS hardware windowing , and applied textures to polygons with its 520,000 transistors.

It was fine for advanced office applications or displaying clean graphical interfaces. But fundamentally, it's a blind monster. A simple rasterizer. »

Karim approached, intrigued, his fatigue vanishing in the face of the boy's technical acuity. As head of software development, he was intimately familiar with the limitations of the hardware on which his programs had to run.

But Karim knew that in the realm of true 3D, of generating complex virtual worlds using computer graphics, the giants of Silicon Graphics (SGI) still reigned supreme in Burbank and Culver City. Their million-dollar supercomputers calculated the geometry that the SONG-III struggled to display in real time.

« The traditional graphics pipeline is a dead end, » Karim confirmed, approaching the workbench. « The central processor, the VESLA , has to calculate all the geometry of the 3D scene.

It calculates the position of each triangle vertex in space, the mathematical perspective, and the light hitting it. Only then does it send the coordinates to the SONG chip , which simply colors the pixels on the screen.

It's a fatal bottleneck for the memory bus. You can't ask the CPU to manage a system's artificial intelligence, a studio's database, and simultaneously calculate a million polygons per second. The CPU will choke. »

« Exactly, » Minh agreed, adjusting his glasses. « If Lazare wants us to crush Silicon Graphics once and for all, if we want our workstations to become the absolute monopoly in Hollywood for digital cinema, and if we want to anticipate the explosion of 3D in interactive entertainment, we couldn't continue like this.

So, I rewired the SONG-III architecture . I had a partial prototype etched onto a blank programmable matrix by the technicians on Volkov's team, making them believe it was a test project for the BBI bus. »

Minh tapped the black chip grafted to the center of his modified map, bristling with handcrafted copper bridges.

« I integrated Transform & Lighting (T&L) directly into hardware, on the coprocessor silicon, » the teenager revealed with the pride of a watchmaker. « I added parallel vector units. The new chip ingests the raw mathematical coordinates and calculates the geometry and lighting of tens of thousands of polygons simultaneously, completely asynchronously with respect to the CPU.

It no longer waits for someone to do the work for it. It thinks about space. It's a Graphics Processing Unit .

A true GPU. The first in the world. »

Karim's eyes widened. Integrating 3D geometry directly onto the graphics card was the absolute Holy Grail of visual computing. It was the theory that the most brilliant engineers across the Atlantic were trying to miniaturize.

And this kid had just tinkered with it on a corner of a table, in a basement in the Parisian suburbs.

But Karim, as head of the software division, immediately recognized the insurmountable obstacle of this hardware heresy. He knew the distance between a physical prototype and a usable product.

« Minh, it's pure genius, » breathed the technical director, admiring but realistic. « But it's a dead brick! Such complex hardware, equipped with an independent parallel vector engine, is utterly useless if the operating system doesn't know how to communicate with it!

Our current API, B3D 1.0 , only includes 2D commands and pixel rendering. VoltaOS doesn't have the instructions needed to send pure geometry to an external GPU. We'd have to rewrite the entire hardware abstraction layer (HAL) of the kernel and develop very low-level drivers capable of bridging the gap without saturating the bus… It's a monumental task that would take an entire team years! »

A thin smile, charged with unfathomable malice, stretched Linh's lips.

The young woman stopped typing on her keyboard and swiveled her chair towards Karim. Under the halogen light, her face retained that Asian impassivity she shared with her brother, but her black eyes sparkled with a silent triumph.

« Minh's material was ready almost six months ago, Karim, » she said, her gentleness a stark contrast to the brutality of her revelation. « If he didn't show it to Lazare or Volkov sooner, it's because he was waiting for me. »

Karim felt his stomach clench. As the supreme head of Volta Software , he controlled, audited, and validated every line of code that passed through the servers in Ivry-sur-Seine. The very idea that a major software project could exist outside his jurisdiction made him dizzy.

« What were you waiting for? » he asked, his voice suddenly husky.

« The pilots, » Linh replied simply. « I've been working on them secretly for a year. »

The silence in the laboratory became oppressive. Only the sound of the ventilation in the test stations continued to blow.

« A year?! » Karim choked out, turning pale. « You coded system drivers behind my back? On my own development servers? »

2390 processor and the stability of our interbank network for the Bank of France," Linh justified with relentless bad faith. « You didn't have time to see what was brewing on the periphery of your own department.

I hid my development directories deep within the secure servers by naming them after obsolete printer protocols. No one ever clicked on them. »

She returned to her screen and typed one last execution command, displaying the thousands of lines of Assembler and C code she had compiled in the nighttime clandestine hours.

« I rewrote the API from scratch, » the young woman explained, her fingers gliding hypnotically across the keys. « I coded the B3D 2.0 API . It's no longer just a graphical interface or a cosmetic overlay.

I created a direct tunnel between the software and Minh's GPU's VRAM, completely bypassing the VoltaOS kernel . The driver I wrote translates the 3D mathematical matrices directly into the card's native vector unit language, with no CPU latency whatsoever.

I gave my brother's machine a dictionary. »

Linh stepped back, inviting Karim to look at the large 21-inch cathode ray monitor, placed in the center of the workbench.

« Do you want to see what a real GPU with its own native drivers can do? »

The monitor lit up with a static crackling sound.

And then, after he's beaten you to a pulp… he'll appoint you vice presidents of the company. »

« I have no intention of killing them, Karim. I even think they took too long to disobey me. »

The voice, low, gravelly and vibrant with a mineral authority, came from the entrance of the laboratory.

Lazare Bonaparte had just stepped forward into the halogen light.

He had been standing there for several minutes, leaning silently against the wall in the dim light of the corridor. Dressed in his usual dark double-breasted suit, he displayed no anger.

The mask of Lazarus, usually so quick to terrify those who broke his rules, had completely vanished.

In its place, his face radiated an emotion of overwhelming rarity. It was pride. A pure, ardent, and almost paternal pride.

Minh and Linh froze. Although they knew of Lazare's affection for them, the man who had rescued them from the Vietnamese hell remained the absolute tyrant of Volta SA. Lazarus did not tolerate anarchy within his walls.

Lazare slowly approached the workbench. He didn't immediately look at the twins. He placed his hands on the table and stared at the monitor where the Notre-Dame model continued to swirl with absolute technological insolence.

He felt a wave of organic warmth wash over him. It wasn't the adrenaline of cyberwarfare or the satisfaction of a successful hostile takeover. It was the deep, unconditional love of a pack leader for his heirs.

He approached Minh and placed both hands on the teenager's shoulders. The contact was firm, rooted in a palpable affection.

« You understood that geometry should no longer be a slave to sequential calculation, Minh, » Lazare murmured, his voice softening, imbued with profound intellectual respect. « You saw the wall, and instead of trying to climb it, you dug a tunnel through it.

That is the very essence of material genius. »

He released the boy and turned to Linh, gazing into the girl's dark, determined eyes.

« And you, Linh... You understood that hardware is just a dead body without language to animate it. You bypassed Karim's defenses, you infiltrated my own servers, and you wrote an API of unprecedented mathematical violence.

You gave a soul to your brother's machine. »

Lazare took a step back, his gaze sweeping over the two teenagers. The emotion that overwhelmed him was dizzying. He was thinking about the attack on Avenue de Marigny.

He was thinking about the Bali bomb in 2026 that had obliterated him in his former life. He knew the fragility of his own existence. We sell VESLA-II workstations with the old SONG chips to film studios in Los Angeles. We equip Hollywood editing suites with our vSTUDIO software . We already have a foot in the door of the entertainment industry. »

He pointed to the makeshift daughter card on the workbench.

« But what you just invented last night isn't a simple evolution. It's the weapon of absolute annihilation. With this hardware GPU and the B3D 2.0 API , we're no longer going to be content with just having market share in Hollywood.

We're going to consolidate our empire to the point where the very existence of competitors like Silicon Graphics becomes mathematically absurd. We're going to sell them the computing power of a million-dollar supercomputer in a three-thousand-euro computer tower. »

Lazare approached the Linh terminal.

« Karim, » ordered Lazarus, turning to his technical director. « Call Maître Armand Delacroix in Geneva first thing in the morning. Wake him up if you have to.

I want the architectural patents for this hardware Transform & Lighting engine , as well as the rights to the low-level API source code, drafted and filed immediately. »

« Under the aegis of Volta SA and the R&D division, as usual? asked Karim, already taking out his notebook. »

« No, » Lazarus declared in a voice that admitted no reply.

Lazarus turned towards the twins, a smile of infinite tenderness, almost overwhelming, softening the sharply chiseled features of his face.

These patents will not be buried in the company's anonymous R&D portfolio. They will be filed in the company's name. The hardware patent will be registered in the name of Minh Bonaparte.

The software patent will be registered in the name of Linh Bonaparte.

The two teenagers' eyes widened, struck by the magnitude of the gift. Being the nominal holder of such a significant patent within the Volta empire made them, at seventeen, financially and historically untouchable in global industry.

It was a formal transfer of power.

« You are not just engineers in my company, » Lazare murmured, approaching them and placing an affectionate hand on Linh's cheek. « You are my children.

You are the heirs to my code and my blood. If anything should happen to me, if the paranoia of this world should finally catch up with me… I want the whole world to know that the genius of this family will not die with me.

You are the next generation. The empire will belong to you. »

Minh lowered his eyes, overwhelmed by the emotion of this declaration of absolute filiation, while Linh placed his own hand on Lazare's, silently sealing the dynastic pact.

But the sixty-year-old engineer, despite the deep affection he felt, remained the commander-in-chief of an army on the march. This moment of filial grace could not overshadow the urgency of the information war.

Lazarus straightened up, readjusting his costume, and Lazarus's aura regained control of the space.

He approached the wall calendar that adorned the laboratory wall and pointed to a specific date.

« Intel and AMD are obsessed with the megahertz of their central processing units. They don't realize that the next battle will be fought over displays and 3D. But we have to give them time to exhaust themselves.

I'm giving you time. This project, we will officially call it SONG-IV . »

Lazarus stared at the twins with incandescent intensity.

« You have several months to clean this prototype, refine the etching mask for the Alsace foundry, and debug your drivers to perfection. The chip must be finalized, produced, and integrated into our new machines by 1996.

I want the SONG-IV to be ready, stable, and ready to be unveiled to the world on May 1, 1996. »

May 1st.

The date hadn't been chosen at random. It was the exact anniversary of the launch of the first Compaq AXIOM. Lazare Bonaparte had just enshrined this date on the world calendar.
