Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: The Ring

At the bottom of the dark valley, on the riverbank crime scene, Dorothy sat on a cold, wet Stone, carefully reading the letter in her hand. Her brow was slightly furrowed as she seriously pondered the content of the letter, analyzing the information she gleaned from it. To be honest, the letter's content surprised her greatly.

From the content of the letter, it could be interpreted that the guy she had shot, who seemed to be the bandit leader, was named Edrick. He was likely a black power leader in a place called Vokan.

Edrick had apparently wanted to join a certain organization before and had even written an application. The letter Dorothy held now was the reply. The organization Edrick yearned for had given Ed a special entrance test. The test's content was surprisingly to abduct a white-haired girl around thirteen years old at a specific time and place. This was clearly Dorothy herself!

The primary purpose of this group of bandits hijacking the carriage wasn't for wealth, but for Dorothy, this ordinary farm girl!? What the heck is this?

Thinking of this, Dorothy pressed her forehead and once again carefully searched the memories of the original owner of this body. She found nothing special. From childhood to adulthood, Dorothy had been obedient, intelligent, diligent, and serious. She didn't have much money, no special abilities, no strange patterns in her eyes, and no strange things sealed within her body. Her hair and eye color were just slightly rare... How could a mysterious organization be targeting her?

Dorothy was completely baffled for a moment. After thinking without result, she shook her head and then turned to analyze other information in the letter.

The specific information about this mysterious organization is currently unknown, but one thing is certain: they are definitely not good people. They associate with bandits like Edrick, arranging kidnappings, and they constantly hide from the Hidden Security Bureau and the Church. Leaving the Church aside for now, the Hidden Security Bureau sounds like a government agency. An organization hiding from the government must also be a criminal organization, otherwise, Edrick, this bandit, wouldn't be thinking of joining.

Also, the letter mentioned the extraordinary field and extraordinary items...

Thinking of this, Dorothy looked at the pile of "trophies" she had just searched from Edrick's body. After rummaging through this pile of "trophies" for a while, she found a ring. This was something she had taken off Edrick's hand earlier, originally thinking she could sell it for a good price.

Dorothy held the ring under the Light and examined it carefully. The ring was entirely made of copper, with a faint circle of intricate patterns engraved on the outer band. Looking closely, these patterns seemed to be a circle of small figures holding hands and dancing strangely.

Based on the content of the previous letter, Edrick had an extraordinary item called the Corpse Puppet Ring that could control corpses. Could it be this one!?

Thinking this, Dorothy put the ring on her index finger. The moment the ring was on her hand, she felt something unusual.

Suddenly, Dorothy felt her consciousness extending outwards, condensing into two lines reaching into the distance. The ends of the extensions were precisely the two strange hounds lying motionless on the ground.

Seeing this, Dorothy took a breath, then with a thought, the two hounds that should have been dead began to twitch, then stood up, slowly approaching Dorothy. However, perhaps because they were roared at close range by the Dragon roar and fell to the ground earlier, the two hounds had severe bone fractures, limping and moving very slowly.

Indeed... Were these two dogs originally corpses? Edrick used the power of this ring to control them. No wonder they stopped moving after Edrick died. This bandit leader actually possessed such an extraordinary item...

Seeing the two controlled hound corpses standing before her, Dorothy was also surprised. In Dorothy's original memories, she had never seen such a strange phenomenon. The extraordinary phenomenon before her was beyond Dorothy's previous experience...

"It seems this world isn't as simple as it appears..."

Touching the strange ring on her hand, Dorothy sighed and muttered to herself. Then she shifted her gaze to another envelope in her hand.

Opening the second envelope, Dorothy began to read the letter inside. Compared to the previous one, this letter was much shorter.

...

Respected Mr. Edrick:

We have received your reply. We knew you wouldn't miss this rare opportunity. We have immediately dispatched someone with your upcoming reward to Vokan, and they will arrive soon. After you succeed, you only need to take a photo of the target and put the photo into the mailbox in front of the ruined house at 24 North Street, Vokan.

Our people will confirm your success based on the photo. If confirmed, we will wait for you at the center of the western forest in Vokan around 12 AM on the night after you deposit the photo. When you bring the target to us, we will also give you the generous reward.

Our people will await your news in Vokan for three days. We wish you a successful operation.

...

After reading the letter, Dorothy put both letters back into the envelope. This was clearly the mysterious organization's reply after Edrick had responded to them. Dorothy also gained considerable information from this letter.

'It seems that mysterious organization currently has people in Vokan. Isn't Vokan the town I'm going to later? It seems I need to be careful when entering the town later. Although I don't know what the organization wants Dorothy for, since they are a black-hearted group, it definitely won't be for anything good...'

Dorothy thought this, then used her dagger to cut a piece of curtain cloth from the overturned carriage. Dorothy cut the cloth in half again, one part to wrap the collected "trophies," and the other part to use as a headscarf to cover her hair when entering the town later.

After everything was prepared, Dorothy set off. As a precaution when setting off, she continued to control the two zombie dogs with the Corpse Puppet Ring as bodyguards, but unfortunately, the bone fractures of these two dogs were too severe, and they couldn't walk fast at all.

'I didn't expect this segment of Unloading Force to be so powerful. Although these two dogs can still move, they can't act as combat power in this state...'

Looking at the two zombie dogs before her that couldn't even stand steadily due to severe bone fractures, Dorothy thought this. Then, after pondering for a while, she tried to release control of the two Corpse dogs. Watching them fall again, Dorothy shifted her gaze to Edrick's corpse nearby.

In her attempts, Dorothy successfully connected the "mental line" extended from the Corpse Puppet Ring to Edrick's corpse and manipulated him to stand up unsteadily. Looking at the reanimated bandit leader with vacant eyes and a pale face, Dorothy took a deep breath.

"Let's use him for now..."

As Dorothy spoke, Edrick, as a silent Corpse, silently picked up the gas Light from the ground and held up the black umbrella again to shield Dorothy from the drizzling rain, just like a servant serving a noble Miss.

Afterward, Dorothy packed her luggage and left the scene of the tragedy with her "servant."
