The following morning, Kai was woken by the shrill ring of his phone. He opened his eyes slowly, wincing at the sunlight pouring through the windscreen. He was in his car, still parked a few feet away from Jessica's building. His neck ached, his mouth tasted like dust, and someone in the world clearly had a personal vendetta against him because the phone would not stop ringing.
He groped blindly across the passenger seat until his fingers found the phone. His mother's name flashed on the screen.
Wonderful.
He had only meant to close his eyes for a few minutes after returning from his sweep of the area. But his body had other plans. After Jessica had asked him to leave, he had respected her choice and walked out. But he had not gone far. He had shifted into his beast and circled the entire block, scanning every shadow and every tree line for whatever had left that scent in her flat.
