Jessica stared blankly at him for a moment, then blinked. "Sebastian is out of town," she said.
"Out of town where?"
"I don't know. Work. He travels." She watched the look in his eyes change—the sharpness, the flicker of something cold, and her stomach tightened. "Why?"
"No reason."
"Mr Mondragon." She folded her arms. "I hope you're not planning to go after him," she added quietly. "Or torture him or something."
Kai tilted his head. "Why would you think that?"
She shrugged, glancing away. "I don't know. Shifters can be brutal like that, can't they?"
Kai's expression stilled. "Is that how you see us? Brutal?"
Jessica did not answer immediately. She kept her gaze fixed somewhere past his shoulder, her arms still crossed over her chest, and she felt her own cheeks go warm because she knew exactly how it had sounded.
