Tang San and Hu Liena had arrived at the Slaughter City to begin their god trials after receiving the inheritance information. It had taken them three months to complete the first trial. Subsequently, they welcomed their second trial. Among the three successors, only one could eventually emerge victorious to inherit the final Asura God position.
When the two of them first learned the rules, they were heartbroken, realizing that only one of them could ultimately inherit the Godhood. Naturally, they thought this because they would never kill each other; they would only team up to deal with the third successor.
Initially, Tang San had no feelings for Hu Liena. However, after spending so much time together and being unable to see Meng Yiran (since Meng Yiran was being monitored, and Tang San dared not contact her), he found his feelings for Hu Liena deepening over time. Otherwise, he wouldn't have been pained by the content of the trial.
Now that the two had begun the second trial together, they found themselves struggling internally with the nature of the task. Fortunately, Hu Liena was very sensible; she chose to let Tang San inherit the Godhood. She would help Tang San eliminate the other successor and then simply forfeit. Their objective was to "defeat" the other two, unlike Dugu Yan's objective, which was to "kill."
This discrepancy existed because the Asura God wanted to narrow the gap between Dugu Yan and the other two as much as possible to select the most outstanding individual. Although He had promised Gu Xuan that He would choose Dugu Yan, the inheritance of Godhood was His own affair. He had given Gu Xuan face, but how He operated the trials was His prerogative.
...
Dugu Yan wandered through the ruins, choosing paths that avoided those strange soul beasts. However, as she moved further out, she realized the number of these creatures was staggering. Moreover, this place was far larger than Heaven Dou City. Her earlier estimation was based only on her line of sight. She had been wandering for three hours now, and the diameter of her trek far exceeded the scale of Heaven Dou City.
The further out she went, the more beasts appeared, until she found it impossible to avoid them. Within her mental detection range of one thousand meters, there were twelve of these strange creatures. This made Dugu Yan quite annoyed, as she had guessed their purpose. With so many beasts and no sign of the other two successors, it was clear these creatures were meant to exhaust her.
There were only two possibilities for why she hadn't met the others. Either the place was too large, and she was unlucky, or the old geezer Asura God was doing it on purpose. After all, she hadn't found any traces of combat involving the other successors. This suggested they hadn't encountered the beasts head-on, or they were simply too far away.
While Dugu Yan was pondering this, in the God Realm, within a dark room, the Asura God stared expressionlessly at a massive holographic map. The map was vast, showing three green dots and numerous red dots. Two of the green dots had already overlapped, but they were very far from the third, almost at opposite ends of the map.
In truth, the Asura God had no interest in manipulating the trials; Dugu Yan's current situation was purely due to poor luck. Because her luck was so bad, the Asura God found it somewhat boring as there was no "exciting" footage to watch.
"Heh... one is a genius recommended by Gu Xuan, the other is a twin martial soul genius. I wonder who will win in the end," the Asura God murmured as the lone green dot finally made contact with a red dot on the map.
Dugu Yan was now facing one of the strange beasts. Before she could observe it further, the beast charged the moment she was spotted. Her reflexes were sharp; as the beast attacked, her body erupted with a faint cyan light. Nine soul rings—three purple, three black, and three grey—rose around her, and the black fourth ring lit up.
"Fourth Soul Skill, Medusa's Gaze!"
Two pillars of silver-white light shot from her eyes. Though the beast was fast, it couldn't evade her mental lock at such close range. Hit by the skill, the beast was petrified before it could even roar. With a swing of her slender legs, Dugu Yan shattered it into dust.
Her first two yellow rings had been elevated to the purple-millennium level during previous trials, and her third was nearly at the ten-thousand-year level. The three grey hundred-thousand-year rings were greyed out because they were sealed by the local power.
Through this attack, she gauged the beast's strength to be around the Peak Soul Emperor level—still a far cry from a Soul Saint using a Martial Soul Avatar. However, for a Rank 63 Soul Emperor, it would be a difficult opponent, especially with so many of them around. These beasts weren't a threat to her, but every skill used consumed soul power.
Now, the other eleven beasts nearby were closing in. They had witnessed her insta-kill the first one, yet still approached, suggesting they had some special sensory link. Dugu Yan didn't want to waste time. She moved her long, shapely legs, luring the eleven beasts into a group until she was in the center of their circle.
"Second Soul Skill, Spirit Serpent's Breath!"
"First Soul Skill, Serpent Spirit Source!"
Her first two purple rings lit up, and a terrifying toxin dissipated from her body, instantly enveloping the beasts. She snapped her fingers, and the inhaled toxins rampaged through their bodies like a virus. With a gentle squeeze of her fist, eleven clumps of pure energy circled her and were absorbed, restoring her soul power and mental strength to their peak.
Her second soul skill could simulate the properties of any poison and was itself an Ultimate Poison. Her first skill could absorb any toxin and convert it into pure soul power to replenish her, while also draining the vitality of poisoned targets. Just like that, eleven Peak Soul Emperor-level beasts were easily dealt with. Dugu Yan realized she didn't need to fear these creatures; they were essentially walking batteries in these ruins.
Now emboldened, she began searching the ruins rapidly. Since these beasts weren't immune to her poison, they all became energy for her. Finally, after wandering for most of the day, she found traces of humans. Following the tracks, she discovered a young man.
The youth looked about twenty, with long blue-gold hair tied behind his back. His face was handsome but carried a hint of killing intent. Holding a Clear Sky Hammer, he was fighting five beasts head-on and already had the upper hand.
Dugu Yan didn't approach immediately. She observed from the shadows and, after confirming there wasn't another successor nearby, decided to reveal herself. Though she was puzzled that this handsome youth was a member of the Clear Sky Clan, she could tell from his performance that his original strength before the seal was at the Soul Sant level. He wasn't the Rank 63 "weakest link" among the three. If he were only Rank 63, he would have been torn apart by those five beasts already.
Dugu Yan walked out openly, her gaze indifferent as she watched him fight the five beasts. Tang San noticed her instantly and froze. Dugu Yan might not recognize him, but he certainly recognized her. During the tournament, she was the only one besides Gu Xuan and himself to possess a ten-thousand-year fourth soul ring. Furthermore, he couldn't forget her breathtaking beauty and alluring figure; few people dressed as boldly as she did. Since her martial soul mutated, she never wore shoes, and her bare jade feet were an unattainable dream for many...
Dugu Yan sized him up, as she truly didn't recognize this Tang San with his drastically changed appearance. Tang San likewise observed her, and seeing that she didn't recognize him, a plan began to form in his mind.
