A sharp, static distortion rippled across her miniature face, her smile flickering over the broken glass on the floor.
"They played with me whenever I got really, really sick from it," she whispered, her smile faltering just a fraction as she looked down at the crinkled letter in her small hands. Her fingers tightened around the paper. "The doctors said not all the kids get that. Just me. Because I'm special to them, like they are to me too."

Alpha Darren's face shifted, a rare, soft warmth breaking through his rigid, clinical mask as he leaned down and playfully pinched both of her cheeks. "Yes, you are, sweet pea. Very special."
Aurora giggled, squirming on his lap and swatting weakly at his large hands, her small fingers still carefully protecting the crinkled letter.
