Cheese was agitated, pacing about the room, his tail twitching in sharp, frantic strokes.
"Cheese…" I gestured for him for the hundredth time, my voice barely a whisper in the quiet, sterile room.
But he simply refused to meet my gaze, keeping his ears erect and snapping them back at the slightest ambient sound. I knew that look. It was the exact tension that straightened his spine whenever Sonya was near.
According to the Scions, "Sonya is wallowing where she belongs." I took their words with a grain of salt, of course. They had no real reason to lie to me about her placement, but trust wasn't exactly something that came naturally to me anymore. Not around them.
I tracked his frantic pacing for a few more seconds before finally rising from the edge of the bed. The moment I got close, Cheese froze. His spine went perfectly rigid, and his head turned sharply away from me.
It was deliberate. Like he couldn't bear to look at me.
