Alex looked at the Veil.
The Veil looked back.
And then level four changed.
Not physically.
The space was the same, the same violet light, the same symbol on the floor, the same Heralds on the flanks.
But the air between Alex and the Veil became different.
Denser.
As if the space between them was of a different nature than the rest of the level.
Fragment 4 manifesting.
Not as armor.
Not as a physical weapon.
As what the Veil covering his face truly was — rebuking the idea that it's only seen in the final moment.
A plane between life and death becoming visible, the barrier separating what exists from what existed thinning within a three-meter radius around the bearer until Alex could almost see through it.
Almost see what lay on the other side.
