CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE
Aisha arrived home to find her mother sitting on the sofa, holding an old photograph with trembling fingers.
Daniel followed her inside, his expression serious.
"Mum, what happened?" Aisha asked.
Grace handed her the photograph without speaking.
It showed a younger Grace standing outside a hospital, holding a baby wrapped in a white blanket. Beside her stood Richard Williams, looking down at the child with an expression Aisha couldn't quite understand.
Aisha turned the photograph over.
YOUR DAUGHTER DESERVES TO KNOW WHO HER FAMILY REALLY IS.
She looked up sharply.
"Why is Richard standing beside you at a hospital?"
Grace closed her eyes.
"Because he came to see me after you were born."
Aisha stared at her.
"You told me Dad was Samuel. You said Richard was someone you loved before you met him."
"That's the truth."
"Then why would someone send me this?"
Grace took a shaky breath. "Because they want you to doubt everything you've ever known."
Aisha looked at the photograph again. The date written at the bottom was the same year she had been born.
"Did Richard know me when I was a baby?"
"Yes."
"Did he know Samuel?"
Grace nodded slowly.
Daniel stepped closer. "Then why has my father never mentioned this?"
"Because Richard and I agreed to leave the past behind," Grace replied. "After Samuel and I married, Richard respected my decision. At least, I believed he did."
Aisha felt overwhelmed.
"Was Samuel really my father?"
Grace immediately reached for her hand.
"Yes, Aisha. Samuel raised you with love, and he was your father in every way that mattered. Nothing in this photograph changes that."
"But why does everyone keep hiding things from me?"
Grace's eyes filled with tears.
"Because some people believe the truth is more dangerous than a lie."
Aisha stood and walked towards the window.
She wanted to believe her mother, but the photograph had raised questions she could no longer ignore.
Daniel joined her.
"We'll find out who sent it," he promised.
Aisha looked at him.
"And if the truth hurts everyone involved?"
Daniel took her hand gently.
"Then we'll face it honestly."
For once, Aisha didn't pull away.
But as she looked down at the photograph, she noticed something she hadn't seen before.
On Richard's wrist was a distinctive silver watch.
The same watch appeared in the photograph she and Daniel had found of Richard meeting the stranger with the scar.
Whoever was threatening them had access to the same history they were trying to uncover.
And that meant the person was closer than they had imagined.
