Chapter 29 - THE CHOICE OF THE HEART

CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE

Aisha woke up on Saturday morning to find a message from Daniel.

I have a surprise for you. Be ready by noon.

She stared at the screen, smiling despite herself.

If this is another investigation, I'm blocking you, she replied.

His answer arrived almost immediately.

No documents. No secrets. Just us.

For once, Aisha allowed herself to enjoy the anticipation.

At noon, Daniel arrived and took her to a quiet garden café. It was a beautiful afternoon, with sunlight filtering through the trees and soft music playing in the background.

Aisha looked around.

"This is lovely."

"I remembered you liked quiet places where you could think."

She smiled.

"You remember too much."

"Only the important things."

They ordered lunch and spent the afternoon talking about their plans, their work and the lives they wanted to build.

Then Daniel became serious.

"Aisha, I need to ask you something."

She placed her glass on the table.

"Go ahead."

"Are we giving this relationship a chance, or are we only holding on because of our history?"

The question caught her off guard.

She thought carefully before answering.

"I used to believe that loving you meant returning to the way things were before. But we're not those teenagers anymore."

Daniel listened.

"I don't want to pretend we can erase six years," she continued. "I want to know who you are now. I want us to build something honest, even if we have to start slowly."

His expression softened.

"That's what I want too."

Aisha reached for his hand.

"Then let's try. No rushing, no assumptions and no running away when things become difficult."

Daniel smiled.

"It's a deal."

He lifted her hand and kissed it gently.

Aisha laughed. "You're becoming dramatic."

"You haven't seen anything yet."

They spent the rest of the afternoon walking through the garden. When Daniel stopped beside a flowering tree, Aisha turned towards him.

"What is it?"

"There's something I've wanted to tell you since the day we met again."

She raised an eyebrow.

"Another confession?"

"Just one more."

He looked at her with quiet sincerity.

"I don't want you because we were once best friends. I want you because of the woman you've become. You're strong, thoughtful and stubborn enough to argue with me even when I'm right."

Aisha laughed.

"Especially when you're wrong."

"See? Exactly what I mean."

Then his expression softened.

"I love you, Aisha. I don't expect you to say it back before you're ready. I just want you to know."

Her heart filled with warmth.

She had spent years trying to silence those three words inside herself. Now she understood that she didn't have to say them out of fear of losing him.

She could say them because they were true.

"I love you too, Daniel."

He stared at her for a moment, as though making sure he had heard correctly.

Then he smiled.

"Can I kiss you?"

Aisha nodded.

Their kiss was gentle and unhurried, carrying the promise of a new beginning rather than an attempt to recover the past.

When they parted, Aisha rested her hand against his cheek.

"Don't make me regret choosing you."

Daniel covered her hand with his.

"I'll spend every day showing you that you didn't."

For the first time, Aisha felt ready to stop treating love as something waiting to hurt her.

She was ready to let it become something they could build together.
