THOR - Chapter 14: The Mill's Call

The fog over Merry had thickened into a suffocating blanket. It no longer drifted lazily through the streets; it pressed against doors, seeped through cracks, and curled around lampposts like fingers. The town was unraveling, and everyone felt it.

Inside the Finch home, exhaustion hung heavy. Maria sat at the kitchen table, her scars dull but her eyes haunted. Martha hovered near her constantly, as though afraid she might vanish if left alone. Logan busied himself with repairs, but his movements were mechanical, his face pale.

Father John stood at the window, his crucifix hidden beneath his coat. He had fought demons before, but never one like this. The Devourer was not a single spirit—it was legion, a hunger that spread like rot. And now it was calling them to the old mill.

The Mill's Pulse

By mid-morning, Maria stirred. Her eyes flickered, her voice trembling. "She's calling," she whispered. "The woman in the veil. She wants us at the mill."

Anni and Hanna exchanged nervous glances. "Why the mill?" Hanna asked.

Maria's voice was hollow. "Because that's where it began. That's where Marcus was taken. That's where the Debt waits."

Father John's face was grim. "The mill is the heart of this curse. The Devourer is gathering strength there. If we confront it, we may end this. But if we fail…"

Logan clenched his fists. "Then we fight. We can't keep running."

The Town's Division

By noon, word spread quickly. Some townspeople whispered that the Finch family was cursed, that they had brought the darkness upon Merry. Others argued that Father John was exaggerating, that the strange events were nothing more than hysteria.

The Devourer thrived on this division. Shadows flickered in the corners of homes, whispering into ears, sowing doubt.

"You cannot trust them," one voice hissed. "They are marked."

"They will betray you," another whispered. "They are already theirs."

Maria clutched her mother's hand, tears streaming down her face. "They hate me," she whispered. "They'll never stand with me."

Martha hugged her tightly. "We'll make them see. We'll make them understand."

The Circle's Decision

That evening, Maria, Anni, and Hanna gathered again in the Finch living room. Their hands trembled, but they held fast.

"We started this together," Hanna said. "We'll end it together."

Anni nodded. "No matter what it takes."

Maria's eyes filled with tears. "Even if it means one of us doesn't make it."

Father John watched them, his heart heavy. He knew the Devourer would demand more. The circle was strong, but the price had only begun to reveal itself.

The Journey to the Mill

At midnight, the fog thickened again. The Finch family, Father John, Anni, and Hanna gathered their courage and set out for the old mill. The streets were empty, the houses silent, but the air carried the faint sound of laughter.

As they approached the mill, the fog grew denser, the air colder. The building loomed ahead, its walls pulsing faintly with purple light.

Maria's voice trembled. "She's here."

Father John raised his crucifix. "Stay together. Do not break the circle."

The Confrontation

Inside the mill, the air was thick with the stench of rot. Shadows clung to the walls, whispering in unison: The Debt must be paid.

The veiled woman appeared, her body towering, her face cracked like parched earth. Behind her stood dozens of hollowed figures—Marcus, his mother, the teacher, and others Maria recognized. Their eyes glowed, their mouths whispered the same word: Mine.

Maria screamed, her scars glowing faintly. "We won't let you win!"

The circle flared, repelling the shadows with bursts of white fire. But the Devourer was relentless. It surged again, its voice booming through the mill. "The Debt is eternal. The circle cannot hold. Blood must be paid."

Closing Image

By dawn, the fog had thinned again, but the battle was far from over. The town was fractured, its unity shattered. The Devourer was stronger than ever, and the circle faced its greatest challenge yet.

Maria sat at the window, staring into the mist. She could feel the entity's presence, not inside her, but around her, moving through the town like smoke.

She whispered to herself, her voice trembling. "The circle is breaking. And if it breaks, the Debt will consume us all."

And in the distance, beyond the valley, the old mill pulsed faintly with purple light, its heartbeat echoing through the town.
