Chapter 1 - A Chance Encounter

The sun was beginning its slow descent, casting a warm golden glow over the busy streets of Ibadan. Aaliyah adjusted her hijab nervously as she walked past the crowded market, her books clutched tightly against her chest. University had been exhausting that day, but she always found solace in her quiet walks home, letting her thoughts drift among the verses she loved to memorize.

As she turned a corner, she almost collided with someone. "Oh! I'm so sorry!" she exclaimed, stepping back.

"No, no, it's my fault," a calm, warm voice replied. Aaliyah looked up and met the eyes of a young man, slightly taller than her, with an easy smile that somehow made her heart flutter.

"I'm Hamza," he said, offering a polite nod. "I didn't see you there."

"Aaliyah," she replied softly, her cheeks warming. She felt an unusual sense of calm around him, as though their meeting was meant to be.

For a few moments, neither moved, and the sounds of the bustling street seemed to fade. There was something in Hamza's gentle gaze—a sincerity that was rare in the world she had grown used to.

"You're a student too?" he asked, glancing at the books she carried.

"Yes… Faculty of Arts," she said. "And you?"

"Engineering," he answered, his smile widening. "I guess we're both buried under assignments and lectures, huh?"

Aaliyah chuckled, realizing she had been tense all day. "Definitely," she said. "It's nice to meet someone who understands that struggle."

They walked together for a few minutes, exchanging small talk about classes and favorite books. Aaliyah found herself opening up, sharing a little about her love for Islamic poetry and her dreams of writing stories that inspire. Hamza listened intently, nodding thoughtfully.

"You know," he said after a pause, "it's rare to meet someone so thoughtful. You seem… different. In a good way."

Aaliyah's heart skipped a beat. She wasn't used to compliments, especially from someone she had just met. "Thank you," she whispered, glancing down shyly.

Before long, they reached a quiet street lined with flowering shrubs. The sun was dipping lower, casting long shadows, and Aaliyah realized she had been talking to Hamza for almost half an hour.

"I should get going," she said reluctantly. "My mom will worry if I'm late."

"I understand," he said. "Maybe… we can meet again? Perhaps at the university library tomorrow?"

Aaliyah hesitated for a moment, then smiled. "I'd like that."

As she walked away, she felt a strange mix of excitement and nervousness. There was something about Hamza that made her feel both safe and curious, a feeling she had never experienced before. For Hamza, too, the encounter lingered in his mind long after she had disappeared from view.

Neither of them realized that this simple, chance meeting was the beginning of something that would change both their lives forever—a story of faith, patience, and the kind of love that grows gently, rooted in respect and trust.
