As I stood outside Lyris's room, my heart raced with anticipation and nerves. What would she say? What would she do? I had never been in this situation before, and my mind was a whirlwind of thoughts and questions but I took a deep breath and knocked on the door, trying to maintain my composure.
"Come in," came a soft voice from inside.
I opened the door slowly, stepping into a world that I had never imagined. Lyris's room was a stark contrast to the sterile chamber we had shared before. The room was large, filled with shelves of documents and books, and candles flickering softly in the corners. It felt like walking into the mind of a distant and mysterious friend.
Lyris was standing by the window, looking out onto the city lights below. She turned to face me as I entered, her face impassive, but I could see a glint of something different in her eyes. It wasn't the same professional distance we had maintained before.
We exchanged a few brief words, discussing the events of the day and the upcoming tests but our conversation quickly turned to the underlying reason for my presence here tonight. She moved toward me slowly, her movements fluid and purposeful.
I closed the distance between us, my heart pounding in anticipation. We were so close now, separated only by a thin layer of cloth. I could feel the heat radiating from her body, and the scent of her perfume filled my nostrils but despite the mounting desire, I remained calm and focused. I knew what I had come here for, and nothing was going to distract me from my goal.
Slowly, she reached up and traced the line of my jaw with her fingertips, sending shivers down my spine. I leaned in closer, my lips brushing against hers in a soft, gentle kiss. She responded in kind, her lips moving against mine, her fingers threading through my hair.
We moved together, our bodies pressed tightly against each other, our hearts racing in sync. Our kisses deepened, became more urgent, more desperate. I could feel her body responding to mine, her breasts pressing against my chest, her hips grinding against my thighs.
I wanted her, more than I had ever wanted anything before but there was something else as well, something darker and more sinister. I wanted her because I knew what lay waiting for me if I could unlock the secret she held within her. I wanted to unleash the power that was hiding deep within me, to become the master of my own destiny.
As we continued to explore each other's bodies, I felt the familiar pull of the darkness inside me, whispering to me, urging me on. I fought against it, struggling to maintain control, but the temptation was too great. I allowed myself to be consumed by the darkness, to become engulfed in the power it promised.
In the next moment, everything changed. The room seemed to fade away, replaced by a void filled with swirling shadows and whispers. Lyris was still there, but she was no longer the composed and professional woman I had known. She was a vessel, a conduit for the dark energy coursing through my veins.
I let go, surrendering to the darkness inside me. With a roar that echoed through the void, I plunged my hands into her body, feeling her warmth against my skin, her heartbeat pounding in sync with my own.
I broke the kiss and trailed my lips down her neck, nipping and sucking at her sensitive skin. She moaned again, her head falling back, her body arching towards me. I pushed her back against the wall, burying my face between her breasts, kissing and nibbling at her hard nipples.
Her moans grew louder, more desperate, as I continued to lavish attention on her chest. I could feel her arousal radiating from her body, her skin hot and wet against my lips. She reached down and fumbled with the buttons on my pants, finally releasing my cock from its confines.
She looked at me with hungry eyes, her hand gripping my shaft tightly. "Please," she whispered, her voice little more than a desperate whimper.
I nodded, stepping back to remove my shirt. Her eyes roamed over my bare chest, taking in the muscles beneath my skin. I moved closer to her again, my cock in my hand, and positioned myself at her entrance.
I pushed slowly, moaning as I felt her tight walls clenching around me. She cried out in pleasure, her body moving with mine, meeting each thrust with equal force. I picked up the pace, pounding into her with reckless abandon, our moans and groans melding together as we lost ourselves in the heat of the moment.
I could feel my control slipping away, my body becoming consumed by the darkness within me. I wanted more, I needed more. And as I felt her body tighten around me, as her walls clenched and rippled with her orgasm, I knew I couldn't hold back anymore.
I reached out with my mind, my fingers digging into her flesh, drawing out every ounce of power and pleasure she could offer. She screamed, her body spasming beneath me, her orgasm becoming an eternal wave of ecstasy.
As I felt my own release building, I activated the Soul Drain, drawing her energy into me, feeding off her essence. She moaned, her body trembling as the pleasure intensified, her eyes rolling back in her head.
I thrust one last time, groaning as my release exploded within her, filling her with my seed. I collapsed on top of her, my breathing heavy, my heart racing.
As I regained my composure, I lifted myself off of her, looking down at her body, covered in sweat and my seed. She lay there, her eyes closed, her chest rising and falling slowly.
I smiled at the sight of her, feeling a sense of satisfaction and power wash over me. She was mine, and she had given herself to me willingly, surrendering to my desires without hesitation.
I leaned down and kissed her forehead, feeling a strange warmth radiating from my lips. I had drained her completely, taking everything she had to offer and more. And yet, she was still alive, her heart still beating, her body still warm.
I couldn't explain it, but somehow, she had survived. I shrugged off the thought, not wanting to overthink it at the moment. I needed rest, and so did she. I pulled my clothes back on, draping her robe over her naked body.
We collapsed on the bed, exhausted but content. As we drifted off to sleep, the darkness inside me seemed to quiet, settling into the corners of my mind, waiting for the next time it would be free to roam.
I slept soundly, dreaming of the endless possibilities of my newfound power.
I woke up before she did.
The room was still dark, the candles burned down to nothing overnight, just thin threads of smoke rising from the wicks. Lyris was asleep beside me, her black hair spread across the pillow, her face carrying that same unguarded quality I had noticed after the first night. The composure she wore like armor during every waking hour simply did not exist when she slept. She looked younger. Less certain. More human, which was an odd thing to think about a demon.
I looked at her for a moment then turned away.
The notifications were already waiting.

I got up quietly and read through each one standing in the dark.
Shadow Step first. I looked at the shadow pooled in the far corner of the room — deep and solid, untouched by the early grey light coming through the curtains. I focused on it the way I had focused on the mana in the testing room, looking for that same door opening sensation. It came faster this time. I stepped.
The corner of the room arrived around me between one breath and the next. I was standing in the shadow I had been looking at from across the room. Lyris was now fifteen feet away, still asleep, completely undisturbed.
I stood there for a moment.
'That,' I thought, 'is going to be extremely useful.'
Dark Sense next. I let it open passively the way the system suggested and immediately felt the room fill with information I had not asked for. Lyris behind me — warm, breathing slowly, alive, the specific texture of her presence distinct and recognizable in a way I could not have described out loud. Two guards in the corridor outside moving at a patrol pace. A servant somewhere three rooms down, stationary, probably asleep in a chair. Something small and fast in the walls — a rat, maybe, or something that passed for one in this world.
I turned it off after ten seconds. Too much. I needed to learn how to filter it before I used it for anything practical.
Void Whisper. I looked at Lyris sleeping and considered it for exactly one second. I decided not to send thoughts into the mind of a sleeping person. That felt like a rule worth keeping, at least for now. I thought about Grakul instead. I thought about what it would be like to be walking through the mansion feeling completely secure in your own house and then suddenly hear a voice in your head that had no source.
I closed that notification and moved on.
Nightmare Touch. I read the description twice. Ten seconds of vivid fear hallucinations through skin contact.
I thought about Grakul again.
I smiled.
I closed the full notification window and stood at the edge of the bed looking at my situation from a distance. Two nights ago I was going to die in a private chamber with no name in any registry that mattered. Now I was standing in a noble house bedroom in the dark with Darkness Affinity, four Ashborn exclusive skills, thirty five banked points, and the ability to feel every living thing within thirty meters.
'The trajectory of this situation,' I thought, 'is improving.'
I sat back down on the edge of the bed. The light outside the curtains was shifting — early morning, the kind of grey that comes just before color returns to the world.
Lyris woke up quietly, the way composed people do — no disorientation, no slow blinking. She was simply asleep and then she was not. She lay still for a moment and I watched her run her internal check. Her eyes moved slightly beneath closed lids. She was going through her abilities, her energy levels, her personal skill. Checking everything.
Nothing appeared wrong to her. Nothing felt missing. She had no framework for what had been taken and no ability to detect it. As far as she could tell she had simply spent another night losing control of a situation she was supposed to control and her body felt fine this morning.
She opened her eyes and looked at me sitting on the edge of the bed in the early light.
A moment passed.
"You are still here," she said.
"You did not tell me to leave," I said.
She said nothing to that. She got up and moved through the room with her usual composure, beginning her morning routine. Unhurried. Controlled. The mask back in place.
But she paused at the window. She stood there looking out at the Varkus grounds in the early light and then she turned and looked back at me once.
Then she turned back to the window.
She left the room a few minutes later without another word.
I stayed. I walked to the window she had been standing at and looked out at the same view — the mansion grounds, the city beyond the walls, the sky going from grey to pale gold at the edges.
I ran through the inventory one more time. Darkness Affinity. Shadow Step. Dark Sense. Void Whisper. Nightmare Touch. Fifty five points total. A side quest to destroy Grakul Varkus that I was going to complete slowly and thoroughly and with considerable personal satisfaction.
A succubus somewhere in this mansion who had just run her test for the second time and gotten results she still could not explain. Who had looked back at me from the window this morning in a way that had nothing to do with analysis.
And somewhere in Aethermoor — I did not know where yet, did not know their names or their faces in this world — the people who had walked into my old life and ended everyone in it.
They did not know I was here. They did not know what I was becoming.
I closed my hand once in the morning light and felt the darkness move in the shadows at the edge of the room. Not fully under my control yet. Just a flicker. Just enough to know it was listening.
'Good morning.'
