Chapter 1 - The Awakening

The night was a sea of artificial light.

Headlights streaked the streets, voices mixed with the sound of engines.

At the top of a building, a young man in a hoodie and with a pale face watched everything in silence.

"What bright lights, it hurts my eyes."

Ringgg. The phone rings.

He answers the phone.

"Have you done the job?"

"Are you drinking again? You know that's bad for you?"

"Fuck it, I'm gonna fuck four whores here. You better do your fucking job. Got it?"

"Fuck you, Herry. I'm almost done here."

The young man hangs up the phone.

"Ahh, what a shitty life."

He jumps from the building and shoots the hook at the top of the building. He enters by breaking the window of one of the apartments.

He enters a room full of scattered toys.

"A child? Well... she's not in the report, so I'll leave her there."

He opens and closes the door slowly, so the child doesn't wake up.

"This must be the parents' room."

He points the gun. Two shots echo through the room. Silence returns to dominate the apartment.

"Job done."

The young man says with the face of someone who hasn't slept in days.

He leaves the apartment as if nothing had happened.

"These people don't even know what system exists in this world. Innocent."

"They live happily there, eating, having fun, being normal. Ahhh...

"I didn't choose what I had to become."

Says the young man, walking down the street, eating an onigiri.

He opens the doors of a bar. Lots of light. A party was happening there.

"What's with all this light?" says the young man, closing his eyes.

"Yami finally came back. You don't disappoint. Come to my office."

Arriving at the office, right there in the bar.

"Did you kill everyone?" Herry asks, sitting in the chair.

"I left the child alive."

"WHY?"

"Well... she wasn't in the report."

"Did you forget our rule?"

"A four-year-old child is going to become a witness?"

"Yami... in this world, everyone is a witness, but I can forgive you.

However... I'm going to take twenty percent more of your earnings."

"But—" he doesn't finish the sentence.

"But nothing. Or do you want to contradict me?"

"No, Herry..."

"By the way, there's another job for you.

"There's a car of mine. I left it in the parking lot. Go there and get it for me."

Yami takes a deep breath.

"Seriously, Herry? I'm already going."

He leaves the establishment.

Yami starts walking to the parking lot.

"What light... my eyes."

Says Yami, with his eyes tearing up.

"Here's his car. I'll finish this soon."

When he was opening the car door—

Click. A stab in the shoulder.

Yami turns quickly, entering combat mode, with the knife still in his arm.

"What the fuck is this? Damn, my arm."

Yami starts pulling the knife from his shoulder.

"Wow... you're really tough."

"Hayato? Why?"

"Yami, you were very useful... But things have changed. Changed a lot..."

"WHAT?"

"Herry wants to get rid of you. You were too obedient."

"But...

Sometimes we throw away the guard dogs."

A smile opens on Hayato's face.

They start fighting. Yami was very strong, even being younger, even with a bleeding arm.

Suddenly, someone arrives walking.

"You still haven't killed him?" the man asks.

"Even you, Soró? Why?"

Before Yami can realize, Soró pulls out a gun, and a sound echoes through the parking lot.

A silence.

The silence was broken by a metallic noise falling to the ground.

Yami falls slowly, with blurred vision, no more hatred, no crying. He just falls, with no more hope.

"Phew. Good thing. That fucker wouldn't go down no matter what."

"Let's go have that beer?" Soró asks.

"Of course."

They both leave as if nothing had happened.

"What irony... I kill just like that. It must be what my mother always told me. What was the name again? Ahhh... karma."

"I get it."

Blood flowed on the ground. Yami closes his eyes. The light burned, stung.

The streetlights begin to flicker.

The ground began to darken.

Yami's shadow began to engulf the entire parking lot.

Two young women arrived at the parking lot. There was nothing left but silence.

Yami's body was thrown between the cars, blood slowly trickling across the concrete. The streetlights were still flickering.

The shorter one stopped in the middle of the parking lot and whistled softly.

"Look at him there."

"Hm… he made a mess."

"Is he dead?"

"Let me check."

She walked to the body and crouched down, pressing two fingers on Yami's neck.

"This one is tough. He awakened right when he was about to die."

The shorter one tilted her head, analyzing Yami's pale face.

"He's younger than I expected."

The lights above flickered again.

Even unconscious, Yami's fingers trembled.

The light pierced his eyelids, burning red inside.

The other let out a small sigh and placed her hand on his wounded shoulder.

"Let's take him before he wakes up thinking he's dead."

The shorter one let out a short laugh.

The air around them vibrated softly.

In the next instant, the parking lot was empty again.

Only the blood and the silence remained.
