Chapter 8 - Chapter 8

Days pass.

Quietly.

Steadily.

Life moves forward.

Morning after morning, the world wakes the same way it always has.

And so do I.

I wake up, go to college and sit in class beside Nari.

She talks about exams, professors, stupid campus rumors. Her voice is bright— like sunlight slipping through a cracked window.

I listen.

Sometimes I smile.

Sometimes I laugh.

And this time… it isn't pretend.

Because something inside me has changed.

I'm not lonely anymore.

Not really.

The mirror no longer waits in silence.

She speaks.

Always.

Every reflection— window glass, a phone screen, the dark surface of a turned-off laptop— becomes a doorway for her voice.

Not a haunting.

A presence.

A guide.

A guardian.

Someone who sees everything I see.

Someone who understands everything I don't say.

One morning, as I stand in front of the bathroom mirror tying my hair, she tilts her head slightly.

"You look different."

Hana: I feel different.

Her smile curves slowly.

"Lighter."

Hana: Maybe.

I tighten the hairband around my ponytail.

Hana: Or maybe I just stopped fighting myself.

She watches me carefully.

"You spent years pretending you were alone."

Hana: I was alone.

Her eyes soften.

"Not anymore."

I lean closer to the mirror, studying her face.

My face.

But not quite.

Hana: Do you ever get tired of watching me?

A small laugh escapes her.

"Never."

Hana: Why?

"Because you're finally becoming who you were meant to be."

I narrow my eyes.

Hana: That sounds suspiciously like something a manipulative spirit would say.

She laughs again.

Amused.

"If I wanted to manipulate you, Hana… you wouldn't notice."

A chill runs through me.

But it isn't fear.

Not anymore.

Hana: Fair point.

I turn away from the sink and grab my bag.

Hana: Nari says we have quiz today.

"Then you should study."

Hana: You're the guardian. Shouldn't you already know the answers?

"Sadly, I guide souls. Not exam papers."

I grin despite myself.

Hana: Useless guardian.

"Unappreciated guide."

I pause at the door and glance back at the mirror.

For a moment, she watches me with something almost… proud.

"Remember something, Hana."

Hana: What?

Her smile becomes sharper.

Colder.

Protective.

"You don't have to be afraid anymore."

I nod slowly.

Hana: I know.

And when I walk out of the room, I feel complete.

Outside, the world keeps moving.

Unaware.

Unchanged.

The police investigation continues.

They search my uncle's house. Ask questions. Knock on doors.

In the end, they only recover one body.

My uncle's.

The men who came that night simply… vanished.

No blood trail.

No witnesses.

No trace that they were ever there.

The police call it a mystery.

A brutal murder committed by unknown intruders.

They write reports.

They question neighbors.

They dig through every corner of the house.

But the truth never surfaces.

Sometimes I stand in front of my uncle's photograph.

His tired smile. His gentle eyes.

The man who believed no child should face the world alone.

Hana: I'm doing well.

My reflection appears beside me in the glass frame.

Watching.

Listening.

Hana: You gave me a home.

I pause for a moment.

Hana: Even if you're gone… I'm not alone.

The reflection tilts her head slightly.

"Because you have me."

And Nari.

For now.

Evening spreads slowly across the campus, calm and unsuspecting.

Soft evening light stretches across the quiet library floor.

Nari sits alone at a table near the back.

A book lies open in front of her.

But she hasn't turned the page in several minutes.

Her chin rests on her hand.

Waiting for me while I collect notes from a professor.

The library is nearly empty.

Too empty.

The air feels wrong.

The door opens.

Footsteps echo through the quiet room.

Heavy.

Unhurried.

Nari keeps her eyes on the book at first.

Until the chair across from her scrapes against the floor.

The sound slices through the silence.

Her head lifts.

A cold knot forms in her stomach.

Cho Seung-min.

His slow smile spreads the moment he recognizes her.

Cho Seung-min: Well… look who's here.

He leans forward on the table.

Cho Seung-min: The quiet one.

Nari stiffens.

Nari: I'm studying.

Cho Seung-min chuckles under his breath.

Cho Seung-min: Studying?

His eyes drift around the empty library.

Cho Seung-min: All alone?

His hand slides slowly across the table.

Stops on her wrist.

Nari flinches at the sudden touch.

Nari: Let go.

Cho Seung-min doesn't move his hand.

Instead, his thumb presses lightly against the inside of her wrist.

Feeling her pulse.

His smile widens.

Cho Seung-min: Your heart's racing.

Cho Seung-min: That's adorable.

Nari tries to pull her hand away.

His grip tightens instantly.

Cho Seung-min: Hey…

His voice drops.

Cho Seung-min: Don't be rude.

Nari: I said let go.

He tilts his head, watching her reaction like someone examining an insect.

Cho Seung-min: You know… you never talk.

His fingers tighten slightly.

Cho Seung-min: I've been watching you for weeks.

Nari's stomach twists.

Cho Seung-min leans closer across the table.

Too close.

Cho Seung-min: Always hiding behind that friend of yours.

A slow grin spreads across his face.

Cho Seung-min: What's her name again.

He pretends to think.

Cho Seung-min: Hana.

Nari's eyes sharpen.

Nari: Leave her out of this.

Cho Seung-min chuckles, clearly enjoying her discomfort.

Cho Seung-min: Protective. I like that.

His fingers drag her chair closer.

The legs scrape loudly across the floor.

Too loud.

Too violent.

Nari: Stop—

She tries to stand.

He shoves her back into the chair.

Hard.

The air leaves her lungs in a quiet gasp.

Cho Seung-min: Relax.

He leans closer.

His breath brushes her check.

Cho Seung-min: You're acting like I'm hurting you.

His hand moves slowly up along her arm.

Testing.

Deliberate.

Nari's voice trembles.

Nari: Hana will be here.

Cho Seung-min grins wider.

Cho Seung-min: Good.

His eyes darken.

Cho Seung-min: I've been waiting to deal with that little guard dog too.

He leans even closer.

Cho Seung-min: But right now…

His fingers tighten painfully around her arm.

Cho Seung-min: You're the one sitting here with me.

Nari tries to pull away again.

He suddenly grips her chin, forcing her to look at him.

Cho Seung-min: Look at me when I'm talking to you.

Her breathing becomes uneven.

Cho Seung-min watches her fear with open amusement.

Cho Seung-min: See?

He chuckles softly, clearly enjoying her fear.

Cho Seung-min: That's the voice I want to hear.

And that's when I walk in.

For a moment—

Everything stops.

The world narrows.

My eyes move across the room slowly.

His hand gripping her.

Her shoulders shaking.

The way she's trapped in the chair.

Something cold settles inside my chest.

Inside my mind—

The reflection stirs.

Amused.

Hungry.

"Another one."

Hana: Yes.

"Look at him."

Her voice curl through my thoughts like silk.

"He thinks he's powerful."

Hana: I see him.

"Predator."

Hana: Yes.

"Shall we punish him?"

My heartbeat slows.

Calm.

Sharp.

Cho Seung-min finally notices me.

He leans back in his chair, still holding Nari's wrist.

Cho Seung-min: Oh look.

He smirks.

Cho Seung-min: The guard dog arrived.

Nari whispers my name.

Nari: Hana…

There is relief in her voice.

But also fear.

Cho Seung-min squeezes her wrist tighter.

Cho Seung-min: Perfect timing.

He nods toward the chair beside him.

Cho Seung-min: Sit down.

His smile turns cruel.

Cho Seung-min: You can watch.

The reflection laughs softly in my mind.

"Disgusting creature."

Hana: Yes.

"Hungry?"

I stare at him.

Hana: Very.

The reflection's voice drops to a whisper.

"Then say the words."

Cho Seung-min raises an eyebrow.

Cho Seung-min:  What? Cat got your tongue?

He leans closer to Nari again.

Cho Seung-min: Or are you just scared—

Hana: Devour him.

The words leave my mouth softly.

Almost gentle.

For a moment—

Nothing happens.

Cho Seung-min snorts.

Cho Seung-min: What the hell was that supposed—

Reality tears.

His body jerks violently.

Cho Seung-min: What the hell—?!

His spine bends backward with a sickening crack.

Bones snap like dry wood.

Nari gasps.

Cho Seung-min claws at the table as his shadow begins to twist.

It stretches.

Peeling away from the floor like something alive.

Cho Seung-min screams.

Cho Seung-min: WHAT IS THIS?! WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!

The shadow coils around his legs.

His waist.

His chest.

Blood sprays across the table.

Across the floor.

His body folds inward—

Crushing.

Breaking.

His shadow opens like a mouth.

And devours him.

The scream cuts off.

Abrupt.

Gone.

Silence swallows the library.

The chair rocks slightly where he sat.

Empty.

Inside my mind, the reflection sighs.

Satisfied.

"Delicious."

Warm calm spreads through my chest.

The predator is gone.

The world is safer.

And for a moment—

I feel perfect.

Then I look at Nari.

Her eyes are wide.

Not from the blood.

Not from the disappearance.

From me.

Fear.

Confusion.

A quiet horror she doesn't understand.

It hits harder than anything.

Hana: Nari…

My voice trembles now.

Soft.

Careful.

She doesn't run.

But she doesn't come closer either.

The reflection whispers again.

Cold.

"Why does it matter what she thinks?"

Hana: Because she's not like them.

"Humans are fragile."

Hana: She is my friend.

Silence stretches between us.

So, I tell her everything.

The mirror.

The voice.

The promise.

The hunger.

The protection.

The punishment.

When I finish—

Nari's eyes search my face.

She still hasn't moved.

And though she says nothing…

Her gaze asks the question she cannot speak.

Was that justice…

Or something worse?

And somehow—

That doubt hurts more than hatred ever could.
