Chapter 81 - The Way He Looks at Her

Night fell quietly over the mansion.

Too quietly.

The kind of silence that didn't feel peaceful—

But heavy.

Watching.

Waiting.

Aria stood by the window, her fingers lightly resting on the cold glass. Outside, the sky stretched endlessly, dark and distant… like freedom she could see—

But not touch.

Her reflection stared back at her.

Same face.

Same eyes.

But everything inside felt… different.

Confused.

Restless.

Lost.

And tangled in something she couldn't understand.

Her thoughts drifted back—

To him.

Rowan.

The way he looked at her.

Not just controlling.

Not just dangerous.

But something else—

Something that made her heartbeat change.

Something she didn't want to feel.

But couldn't ignore.

Her fingers tightened slightly against the glass.

"Why do you look at me like that…" she whispered.

As if he could hear.

As if he would answer.

A soft knock echoed behind her.

Aria stiffened.

Her heart skipped.

She didn't turn immediately.

Because she already knew.

"Come in," she said quietly.

The door opened.

Slowly.

And just like that—

The air changed.

Rowan stepped inside.

His presence filled the room instantly.

Heavy.

Dominant.

Unavoidable.

Aria finally turned.

Their eyes met.

And for a second—

Everything else disappeared.

No words.

No movement.

Just that look.

That same look.

Deep.

Intense.

Like he was searching for something only she had.

Rowan closed the door behind him.

Softly.

"I thought you'd be asleep," he said.

His voice was calm.

Lower now.

Less sharp than before.

Aria tilted her head slightly.

"I could say the same."

A faint pause.

Then—

The corner of his lips lifted.

Just a little.

"You don't trust me enough to sleep peacefully," he replied.

Not a question.

A fact.

Aria didn't deny it.

Didn't confirm it either.

She just watched him.

Carefully.

"You didn't answer my question," she said softly.

Rowan's brows pulled slightly.

"What question?"

Aria took a small step closer.

"Why do you look at me like that?"

The room went still.

Completely.

Rowan didn't speak immediately.

Didn't move.

But something in his eyes shifted.

Deeper.

Darker.

More real.

"Like what?" he asked.

Aria swallowed.

"Like I belong to you."

Silence.

Thick.

Dangerous.

Rowan's gaze didn't leave hers.

Not even for a second.

"Because you do," he said quietly.

The words landed softly—

But hit hard.

Aria's breath caught.

Her heart betrayed her—

Beating faster.

Louder.

She shook her head slightly.

"That's not how it works."

Rowan took a step closer.

Then another.

Closing the distance slowly.

Deliberately.

"That's exactly how it works," he replied.

Aria didn't step back this time.

Didn't run.

She held her ground.

Even though her pulse was racing.

Even though every instinct warned her.

"Even if I don't remember you?" she asked.

A pause.

Rowan's jaw tightened.

For a moment—

Just a moment—

Something flickered in his eyes.

Pain.

Real.

Unhidden.

"Even then," he said.

Softer now.

Aria's chest tightened unexpectedly.

She didn't understand why.

Didn't understand why his words—

His tone—

Affected her like this.

It didn't make sense.

Nothing about him did.

And yet—

She couldn't look away.

Rowan's hand lifted slowly.

Carefully.

As if giving her time to stop him.

But she didn't.

She stood still.

Watching.

Feeling.

His fingers gently touched her cheek.

Warm.

Firm.

But not forceful.

Not this time.

Aria's breath hitched.

Her eyes widened slightly.

Because instead of fear—

Something else spread through her.

Something softer.

Something dangerous in a different way.

Rowan's thumb brushed lightly across her skin.

Slow.

Gentle.

"You used to hate it when I stared," he murmured.

His voice barely above a whisper.

Aria's lips parted.

"Did I?"

A faint, almost invisible smile touched his lips.

"Only when others could see."

Her heart skipped.

Something about that—

Felt intimate.

Too intimate.

Like a memory trying to surface.

Her fingers moved without thinking.

Lightly—

They caught his wrist.

Stopping him.

But not pushing him away.

Just—

Holding.

Rowan stilled.

Their eyes locked again.

Closer now.

Closer than before.

"You're different now," Aria whispered.

Rowan didn't deny it.

"Because you don't remember me," he replied.

A pause.

Then, softer—

"And I don't know how to be gentle with a stranger."

The words lingered in the air.

Raw.

Honest.

Dangerous.

Aria's grip tightened slightly.

"But you're trying," she said quietly.

Rowan looked at her.

Really looked at her.

And for the first time—

He didn't look like a predator.

He looked like a man standing at the edge of something fragile.

Something he didn't want to break.

"Only because it's you," he said.

Her heart trembled.

That feeling again.

Strange.

Pulling.

Confusing.

Her hand slowly loosened around his wrist.

But didn't fall away completely.

Neither of them moved.

Didn't step back.

Didn't close the distance further either.

Just stood there—

Caught in something unspoken.

Uncertain.

Real.

Outside, the wind brushed softly against the windows.

Inside—

Everything felt still.

Suspended.

Like time had paused just for them.

Aria's gaze dropped briefly—

To his lips.

Then quickly lifted again.

But it was enough.

Rowan noticed.

Of course he did.

His eyes darkened slightly.

Not dangerous.

Not threatening.

Just—

Aware.

"You should sleep," he said quietly.

But he didn't move.

Didn't step away.

Aria almost smiled.

"Are you going to lock the door again?"

A faint pause.

Then—

"No."

The answer surprised her.

"Why?"

Rowan's gaze held hers.

"Because tonight…" he said slowly,

"I want to see if you'll stay."

Her breath caught.

The words wrapped around her—

Soft.

But binding.

She didn't answer.

Couldn't.

Because she didn't know the answer herself.

Rowan gently pulled his hand away.

Slowly.

Reluctantly.

Then stepped back.

Creating space.

But not distance.

"Goodnight, Aria."

And just like that—

He turned.

And walked toward the door.

Aria watched him go.

Her heart still unsteady.

Her thoughts tangled.

Her emotions—

Even worse.

Because for the first time—

She wasn't sure what scared her more.

Him.

Or the way she was starting to feel when he was close.

The door clicked softly as he left.

And silence returned.

But this time—

It didn't feel as heavy.

Aria slowly sat on the edge of the bed.

Her fingers lifting unconsciously—

Touching the place where his hand had been.

Still warm.

Still real.

She closed her eyes.

Just for a moment.

And whispered softly—

"Who are you to me… Rowan?"

No answer came.

But somewhere deep inside—

That quiet voice stirred again.

Not warning.

Not fear.

Something else.

Something softer.

Something dangerous in its own way—

Stay.

Aria's eyes slowly opened.

Her gaze drifted toward the door.

Then to the window.

Then back again.

Caught between two worlds.

Two choices.

Two truths she didn't understand yet.

And tonight—

For the first time—

She didn't try to run.
