Chapter 12 - Chapter 12 — Shadows Over the Heart

The office lights were dimmed, casting long shadows across the polished floors. Rain pelted the windows outside, silver streaks catching on the glass, reflecting the neon city lights in distorted, flickering patterns. Aria Bennett leaned against the edge of the conference table, arms crossed, yet her posture radiated tension — a delicate mix of anticipation and restraint.

Dominic Vale entered, his presence commanding as always. Broad-shouldered, tall, every step measured, yet there was an edge to him tonight — subtle, magnetic, charged. His eyes, sharp and calculating, softened when they found hers, a gray-blue intensity that made her chest tighten and pulse quicken.

"You stayed late again," he murmured, voice low, controlled, yet with a hint of something unspoken.

"I… had to finish the reports," Aria replied, brushing a loose strand of her dark hair behind her ear. Her long waves shimmered faintly in the office light, catching Dominic's attention more than she knew. He noticed the curve of her wrist as she reached for the papers, the delicate arch of her neck — small details, subtle, but incendiary.

Dominic moved closer, closing the space between them, though not fully crossing the line. The heat radiating from him was tangible — a low, restrained fire that made her stomach flutter. "You're careful," he said, "but reckless. You know exactly what you're doing, don't you?"

Aria swallowed, heart hammering. "I… I'm not sure."

"You are," he countered, his voice a low growl. He brushed a finger lightly along hers as he passed by, deliberate, teasing, a spark that ran straight through her veins. "You feel it too. That tension."

Her lips parted, pulse racing. She could feel his presence in every inch of the room — the way his shoulders squared, his jaw tightened just slightly, the subtle clench of his hands as he approached. "Yes," she admitted softly. "Every time we're close, I… feel it."

Dominic's gaze darkened. He leaned just enough into her space that she could smell the faint scent of his cologne — sharp, clean, intoxicating — without touching. Every instinct in her screamed, yet her mind whispered restraint.

A faint ping from her phone shattered the moment.

Selene.

Aria's stomach dropped. She glanced down. "Some mistakes are seen. Some consequences are inevitable."

Dominic's eyes flicked to her phone. Calm returned instantly to his posture, but his aura remained coiled, protective, dangerous. "Stay," he said softly. "I'll handle this."

Aria nodded, breathing shaky. She watched him stride to the other side of the office, every movement calculated, muscles taut under the sharp cut of his tailored jacket. He returned minutes later, calm yet charged, like a storm barely restrained.

He moved closer, brushing her hand again — casual, almost accidental, yet every nerve in her body recognized the intent. "We can't ignore this," he whispered. "Not tonight."

Aria's pulse pounded. Her lips parted slightly. She traced a fingertip along the edge of her desk, imagining his hand instead. "I know," she murmured, voice low, caught between restraint and desire.

Dominic's eyes softened slightly, but the intensity never faded. "Fire and ice," he murmured, tone barely audible. "You and me. And everything in between."

Outside, the storm rumbled, but inside, tension crackled, thick and suffocating. Every subtle brush of fingers, every glance, every breath became a magnet, pulling them toward something inevitable yet forbidden.

Selene's influence lingered like a shadow just beyond the glass — precise, cold, watching. Every heartbeat, every inch of desire, every stolen glance had been noted, cataloged, and calculated. The game wasn't theirs alone.

Aria exhaled slowly, realizing something she hadn't fully admitted before: the danger made every moment with him more intoxicating, more impossible to resist.

And for the first time, she wondered how much longer they could survive this slow-burning storm before it consumed them both.
