Chapter 1 - Happily Ever Before?

I love you too, babe, said Sam, all giggly and happy, as they stepped into the restaurant to meet both parents. Sam has been in a relationship with Brayden since college and they were about to plan their wedding. They met up with both parents at a fancy Italian restaurant called La da Vinci to finalize on the wedding preparations and for a private family bonding time before the wedding takes place.

Hey Sam Brayden's mum Claudia called out standing from her chair to give Sam a big warm hug, the other parents were beaming with pride and joy seeing the two couples so in love with each other. Here are the two love birds at last Sam's mum said while laughing you both kept us waiting for a long time. Sam nudged Brayden and acted all shy while Brayden lied that they were caught up in traffic.

Dinner commenced beautifully and everyone had a swell time the parents were happy the couples were happy and then the bomb question came. So who's gonna leave whose job said Brayden's father, forks paused mid- air. Sam slowly placed her wine glass down. No one dared look at each other, and the table became awkwardly silent as the two couples hadn't quite concluded this. Brayden is rich and also the owner of a very successful start-up business and stays in Seattle while Sam is a lawyer and loves defending the helpless and is also about to get a promotion at her place of work too but the problem is that Sam resides in Manchester. And None of them are willing to come to a compromise, this has been a repeating argument between both of them and both have strong egos and are not ready to sacrifice their careers especially when they are thriving in it.

Sam remembers the last argument they had, she had brought up the moving issue and career changes and Brayden already made up his mind and told her there was nothing to think about, she's a woman and needs to be present in her home and as the male figure he is burdened with the responsibility of taking care of the bills and also providing for the home. Sam was very upset and angry at this statement, She didn't want to be a stay-at-home mom who makes the whole house and providing babies her whole personality, she wanted to do more for herself and for the weak people who are not capable of defending themselves. The argument made them not speak to each other for days until Brayden came to apologize and he didn't even apologize for what he said, he apologized because of the tone he used, meaning he still stood his ground on it. Sam thought that with time she'll be able to convince him, at least before or during the wedding why she needs to stay on in Manchester. Sam cleared her throat and replied… well that's not being settled on but soon enough we'll figure something out, she said while holding Brayden's hands. That seemed to clear the tension a bit and the rest of the night went smoothly as planned. It was time to say goodbye, they all stood up, Brayden's parents looked at Sam with so much adoration held her hands and congratulated her while Sam's dad was laughing out loud with his soon to be son- in law. They all said their final goodbyes and headed towards their car.

The ride home was rather silent, I couldn't look at Brayden and he didn't say a word to me. We got home and made preparations to go to bed and we still haven't spoken a word to each other. We got into bed and I pretended to sleep off to avoid any conversation I was already exhausted. Around 3:00 a.m., Brayden nudged me, he called my name, Sam? Sam? Are you asleep? I opened my eyes and turned to face him and I had tears in my eyes.
