Chapter 119 - Moon Order

The morning sun had barely begun to filter through the grand market square when it slowly stirred to life. Metal shutters clattered open, and the rising murmur of voices breathed energy into the cold morning air. At the very center of the bustling square stood an ornate stone fountain. A steady plume of water shot high into the air before breaking apart and cascading back down in a fine, glistening mist.

Directly in front of the fountain, a group of local musicians had settled in. One blew a soothing melody on a wooden flute while others strummed stringed instruments, weaving a rich tune that echoed through the market streets. The music seemed to catch the crowd in a trance, slowing down the relentless rush of early morning commerce.

A large crowd had formed a ring around the performers. In the center, men and women swayed and danced to the rhythm, entirely lost in the moment. Partners spun together with linked hands, stepping effortlessly to the tempo. Spectators clapped along to encourage them, while young children mimicked the steps, laughing as they twirled around on clumsy feet.

The market was alive with an infectious warmth. For a brief moment, it felt as though everyone had set aside their daily burdens, completely surrendered to the simple joy of the morning.

Standing at the edge of the crowd, Leo and Ray watched the scene unfold. Ray, in particular, looked utterly bewildered. Just a short while ago, he had seen these exact same people panicking about being late, rushing as if their very lives depended on catching an elusive train.

Ray narrowed his eyes in annoyance, muttering under his breath, "Unbelievable. Just minutes ago, they were wringing their hands like it was the end of the world. Now look at them—dancing without a care in the world."

Leo rested a hand on Ray's shoulder, a faint smirk playing on his lips. "Don't sweat it, Ray. This world is full of strange people. Don't let them get to you—just ignore them and let's keep moving."

Ray offered one last sharp glare over his shoulder before turning away. As the two began walking down the street, the cheerful music behind them faded into the background, replaced by the ambient hum of the alleyways.

A short distance ahead, a yellowed poster pasted onto a cracked stone wall caught Leo's attention. It was a 'WANTED' notice. The sketch depicted a tall man with deeply tanned skin, his features obscured by his own hand, leaving only his imposing posture and rugged attire visible. Beneath the portrait, bold block letters spelled out the astronomical reward for his capture, dead or alive: 50 Platinum Coins.

Leo stopped in his tracks, his eyes widening at the staggering sum. "Ray, hold up a second," he said, pointing at the wall. "Do you know who this guy is? That's a ridiculous bounty."

Ray leaned in, inspecting the subtle mark inked onto the figure's forearm in the sketch. His expression immediately hardened. "You don't need a name to identify him," Ray said, his voice dropping an octave. "That mark alone proves he's not just some ordinary mercenary—he's a member of the MOON ORDER."

Leo raised an eyebrow, curiosity mixing with suspicion. "The Moon Order? What is that?"

"Across all seven continents of this world, there are thousands of Hunters willing to do anything for the right price," Ray explained as they resumed their pace. "But almost all of them answer to someone—a guild, a noble house, or a kingdom's authority. They follow orders from above. The Moon Order is completely different."

Ray paused, choosing his words carefully. "They don't recognize any authority, nor do they kneel to any king. They are entirely autonomous. They only take contracts that interest them. If a mission doesn't appeal to them, they will reject it outright—even if the offer comes directly from a monarch. They simply do not care about power or political pressure."

Leo listened intently, matching Ray's steady stride. "So, is it a massive syndicate?"

"Far from it," Ray replied, shaking his head. "It's an elite, shadowy group of assassins that every ruler on the continent desperately wants to hire. Why? Because the Moon Order has never failed a single mission—no matter how high-profile the target. The kings of Morveth and Kelvrin once pooled together over a hundred platinum coins just to retain their services, and the Order turned them down without a second thought."

Ray glanced around the quiet alley before continuing. "Nobody knows who their members truly are, where their hideouts are located, or who their next target will be."

Leo processed the information in silence for a moment before looking back toward the main street. "So the man on that poster... he's one of them?"

Ray gave a grim nod. "Yeah. And if a Moon Order operative is skulking around here, it means something dangerous is about to unfold. We need to stay sharp."

They reached the end of the cobblestone alley, where a heavy wooden carriage was already waiting for them. Without missing a beat, both stepped inside and pulled the door shut. The carriage lurked forward, its iron-rimmed wheels grinding against the stone road as it carried them away.

Inside the dim compartment, the noise of the market faded completely. But in Leo's mind, one name lingered, burning bright against the darkness—The Moon Order.
