Before the next bodies made it through the abandoned cars, a low sound rolled across the road.
It took me a second to realize that it wasn't coming from the zombies already standing in front of us. They remained perfectly silent, their backs curved and their empty faces still turned toward me as though waiting to see whether I approved of the giant corpses they had dragged across half the city.
The sound came again, louder this time.
A familiar mixture of growls, snapping teeth, and bodies crashing into anything stupid enough to stand in their way.
Chenghai looked down at his phone. "More movement on the eastern cameras."
"More?" I repeated, looking at the hundreds of zombies already filling the road. "Because this wasn't excessive enough?"
He switched feeds before turning the screen toward us. The camera shook slightly every time something struck the post supporting it, but there was no mistaking the horde pushing through the trees.
They weren't walking in lines.
