"Chief..." he began cautiously. "Did your sister-in-law really run away?"
Dante immediately shot him a warning glance, silently questioning whether that was a subject he should be bringing up at all, but Mateo merely shrugged, his curiosity getting the better of him.
Santiago never took his eyes off the docks.
"I warned Gabriel about that woman a long time ago," he replied calmly, the faintest trace of a smirk touching the corner of his mouth. "He chose not to listen."
There wasn't the slightest hint of satisfaction in his voice. If anything, it sounded more like someone stating a fact that had finally come to pass.
Mateo rubbed the back of his neck before letting out a small laugh.
"I suppose you're right." He hesitated briefly before adding, "Still... you never really know what's going on inside someone's head."
Santiago remained silent.
Encouraged by the lack of a response, Mateo allowed himself another grin.
