Santiago looked down at their joined hands before returning his gaze to her face. The child was their connection—perhaps the only connection they had ever been certain of. And now, lying there frightened and vulnerable, Daniella was fighting to protect that connection with everything she had.
He gently brushed his thumb across her knuckles, forcing himself to remain calm for her sake. "Just hold on," he murmured. "Let Elias do his job. We're going to get through this."
He could not promise her that everything would be fine. He could not promise that there would be no complications. But he could promise her that he would remain beside her while they found out.
The nurse returned with the laboratory results while Dr. Elias was still working over the ultrasound machine. He took the report from her without stepping away from Daniella, his eyes moving rapidly over the figures as another nurse adjusted the IV and continued recording her vital signs.
