Chapter 6
(The Shadow of a Relationship, The Beginning of Conflict)
The first few days of college life were just as they usually are—busy and filled with excitement. New classes, new friends, a new chapter—everything carried a sense of unfamiliar curiosity. But amidst all that curiosity, an unusual presence named Ayush quietly made his way into Aishi's life.
At first, Aishi tried to ignore him. But the more she tried, the more Ayush seemed to appear—on her face, in her thoughts, between the pages of her notebook, even in her daily routine. Ayush was slowly becoming a strange habit—one she wanted to stay away from, yet unknowingly kept drawing closer to.
That day, during class, the professor suddenly asked,
"Who will present tomorrow's literature discussion?"
Silence filled the room. No one raised a hand, no one spoke. And in that silence, Ayush said,
"Sir, Aishi and I will do it together."
Aishi looked at him, startled. Almost frozen, she said,
"Who said I'll work with you?"
Ayush replied casually,
"You didn't. But I said it before you could refuse. Now don't say no—I've already given my word."
That evening, they met at the library. Aishi had decided she would clearly tell him she wouldn't be part of the presentation. But when she arrived, she saw Ayush already sitting there, wearing that familiar carefree smile—as if nothing in the world bothered him.
She sat down quietly and said,
"Why do you decide everything like this?"
Ayush grew serious and replied,
"Because in the things you decide, there's no place for me. I just try to bring a little light to the places you never look at."
Aishi lowered her head. After a moment, she said softly,
"There's nothing in me worth noticing. I'm just an ordinary person."
Ayush looked at her and said,
"Is that so? Then maybe I'm the fortunate one who found something extraordinary in the ordinary."
A faint stir touched Aishi's eyes. Outside, the sky was cloudy. A soft breeze entered through the library window. In that silent atmosphere, the two of them were reading each other more than the pages of their books.
Sometimes Ayush glanced at the notebook in Aishi's hands, then quickly looked away—as if something unspoken kept touching his heart again and again.
On the day of the presentation, they stood together in the college auditorium. Aishi was a bit nervous, Ayush calm as ever. Aishi realized that her fear lessened when Ayush stood beside her. The way he looked, the way he spoke—it felt like he himself was a shadow built of strength.
Together, they presented the life of the writer Amritlal Bose. The class seemed to pause as everyone watched them. Occasionally, Ayush would look at Aishi while speaking, and she would quickly turn her face away—yet she could feel the language in his eyes.
When they finished, the entire class applauded. Such clarity, confidence, and mutual understanding—it was something rare to witness.
The professor said,
"You two make a good team. Keep this understanding always."
Aishi's cheeks turned red. In a low voice, she asked Ayush,
"How do you stay so normal all the time?"
Ayush smiled slightly and said,
"Because I know you're beside me. And when you are, I'm never afraid."
Aishi said nothing. She just looked down at her notebook. But inside, words echoed—
"I'm beside him?"
She questioned herself,
"Am I really? Do I feel something for him?"
She wanted to shake her head, but her heart answered firmly—
"Maybe… a little."
That evening, on the way home, Ayush suggested they walk together. Aishi walked silently beside him. She said nothing, but her steps revealed that she was matching his pace.
At one point, Ayush said,
"You're a strong girl, you know? But the strongest hearts are often the softest."
Aishi suppressed a smile, as if saying,
"It's all drama. I won't soften so easily."
But deep inside, she knew—something had already begun to melt.
The foundation of their relationship slowly began to form—no confessions, no proposals, just habits, understanding, and the exchange of unspoken emotions.
Yet Aishi still tried to convince herself,
"No… this is nothing more than friendship."
But a voice within whispered,
"You two belong to different worlds… and that distance still exists."
And from that distance, their first small conflicts quietly began to take shape…
To be continued...
