Chapter 1 - AYATOLLAH ALI KHAMENEI

Ali Khamenei was born on July 17, 1939, in Mashhad, a holy city in northeastern Iran. He came from a religious Shiite family. His father, Sayyed Javad Khamenei, was a cleric, and the family lived a modest life. From a young age, Khamenei studied Islamic sciences.

He later continued his religious studies in Qom, one of the most important centers of Shiite scholarship. There, he studied under prominent clerics, including Ruhollah Khomeini. During the 1960s and 1970s, he became involved in opposition activities against Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi and was arrested multiple times.

🔥 Role in the 1979 Islamic Revolution

When the Iranian Revolution took place in 1979, Khamenei played an important role in establishing the new Islamic government. After the revolution succeeded, he became part of the Revolutionary Council and quickly rose in political influence.

In 1981, following political assassinations and instability, he was elected as the third President of Iran. However, real authority at that time remained with Ayatollah Khomeini.

👑 Supreme Leader of Iran (1989–Present)

After the death of Ruhollah Khomeini in 1989, the Assembly of Experts selected Ali Khamenei to become the Supreme Leader of Iran. Although some questioned his religious rank at the time, the constitution was amended, and he assumed the position.

As Supreme Leader, he gained control over:

The armed forces

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC)

The judiciary

State broadcasting

Major foreign policy decisions

He became one of the most powerful figures in the Middle East and maintained a firm stance against the United States and Israel.

🧨 Domestic and Regional Challenges

During his leadership, Iran experienced several major protests:

1999 student protests

2009 Green Movement protests after disputed elections

2022–2023 "Woman, Life, Freedom" protests

Internationally, Iran expanded its regional influence by supporting allied groups in Lebanon, Iraq, Syria, and elsewhere, increasing tensions with Western nations.

📉 Later Years and Legacy

In later years, Iran faced heavy economic sanctions, inflation, and rising public dissatisfaction. Critics accused his leadership of limiting political freedoms and restricting opposition voices, while supporters viewed him as a defender of Islamic values and national independence.

📌 Conclusion

Ali Khamenei remains one of the longest-serving and most influential leaders in modern Middle Eastern politics. His legacy is complex and debated:

✔ Strong centralized authority

✔ Firm anti-Western foreign policy

✔ Expanded regional influence

✔ Controversial domestic governance
