Chapter 2: The Harvest Moon and the Hilsa
The rainy season arrived with a roar. The sky turned a deep, bruised purple. This was the time for the Ilish (Hilsa).
The men gathered their nets, shouting to one another in their rhythmic dialect. "Oi Kashem! Nao khol, deri koira labh nai!" (Hey Kashem! Launch the boat, no point in delaying!)
Lalon watched the silver fish jump like fallen stars. The village smelled of fried fish and mustard oil. In every kitchen, the women gossiped. "Ei, shuncho? Shefali'r biye naki thik hoiche?" (Hey, did you hear? Is Shefali's marriage fixed?) Life was simple, but the joy was as vast as the overflowing river.
