Chapter 29
Historical records were vague about Itama's death. He knew it was coming soon. The pressure of the wars was escalating. He could feel the gaze of history upon him. He had a choice: he could use his full power to blatantly change events, save himself, and risk an unknown future. Or he could follow the script, die as history dictated, and become a martyr to fuel Hashirama's resolve for peace, while perhaps finding a way to "survive" in secret.
He discussed it with Tobirama in coded terms. "If a shinobi must die for the dream to live, what is the most logical course?" Itama asked.
Tobirama's face was stone. "The mission comes first. The village comes first. Even over our own lives." He looked at his younger brother, and for a second, his mask slipped, revealing a torrent of protective fear. "But logic does not dictate seeking death. It dictates using every asset to ensure victory and survival."
Itama nodded. He had his answer. He would not go quietly to his fate. He would meet it on his own terms.
