Chapter 25 - A Song of Ash and Mirror Flame 25

A Song of Ash and Mirror Flame

Arc XXV — Ash in the Cradle

I. The Prince's Egg Fails

Narrative

The egg was watched day and night.

Maesters whispered of warmth.

Dragonkeepers listened for cracks.

Weeks passed.

Then months.

Nothing.

No tremor.

No smoke.

Only cold stone in silk cushions beside the infant prince.

The court began murmuring.

Softly at first.

Then louder.

A dragonless son.

In contrast—

Rhaenyra had bonded long ago.

And the realm remembers symbols.

Alicent POV

Alicent Hightower dismissed servants from the chamber.

She stared at the lifeless egg.

"It only needs time," she insisted.

But doubt crept in.

Was this a sign?

Or coincidence?

When she heard whispers in the corridors — comparisons to Rhaenyra — her jaw tightened.

She would not allow her son to be diminished by superstition.

II. Rhaenyra Meets Rose (Formally)

They met in the Tower of the Hand.

No secrets this time.

No shadows.

Rhaenyra Targaryen wore black trimmed in red.

Rose wore Essosi silks — understated but unmistakably foreign.

"You built networks in my city," Rhaenyra began calmly.

"In your name," Rose corrected gently.

Rhaenyra's eyes sharpened.

"And your loyalty?"

Rose did not hesitate.

"To him."

A pause.

Then:

"And he stands with you."

Rhaenyra studied her.

"You love him?"

Rose smiled faintly.

"I survived with him."

Not the same answer.

But not denial either.

Rhaenyra stepped closer.

"You are not my enemy."

Rose inclined her head.

"Then let us ensure we share the same enemies."

It was not friendship.

But it was alignment.

III. The Royal Hunt

Narrative

The King announced a grand hunt in the kingswood outside King's Landing — celebrating his son's second name day.

Just as in the histories.

Banners flew.

Nobles gathered.

Wine flowed.

But one difference:

Rhaenyra did not ride beside Ser Criston Cole.

Instead—

An elite knight of your order rode at her side.

Ser Vaelor Draegon.

Silent.

Disciplined.

Watching everything.

Rhaenyra POV

You could feel the stares.

Your half-brother celebrated loudly.

Lords toasted him.

But none dared disrespect you.

Not with the masked prince's sigil on the knight guarding your flank.

When a boar charged unexpectedly—

Vaelor reacted instantly.

Shield first.

Spear through the throat in one clean motion.

Not dramatic.

Efficient.

The court noticed.

Protection matters.

And you were not alone.

That night, instead of drunken laughter—

You slipped away into the forest.

Alone with your thoughts.

You killed your own stag.

Not white.

But strong.

And you dragged it back yourself.

A message.

I do not require saving.

IV. Marriage Pressure Intensifies

Narrative

Back at court, pressure mounted.

Lords petitioned Viserys.

"A match must be secured."

"To strengthen succession."

Names surfaced.

Laenor Velaryon most prominently.

An alliance with Corlys Velaryon would stabilize the realm.

Viserys summoned Rhaenyra.

"You must wed."

Her reply was cool.

"On my terms."

He did not ask what those terms were.

He feared the answer.

V. Confrontation — Rose and Alicent

Alicent POV

It happened in a sunlit corridor.

Unexpected.

Alicent Hightower encountered Rose leaving Rhaenyra's chambers.

"Essosi," Alicent said coolly.

"Your Grace," Rose replied with perfect courtesy.

"You move freely for a foreigner."

"I move where I am welcomed."

Alicent's eyes hardened.

"You bring strange influences."

Rose smiled faintly.

"And yet the city prospers."

A dangerous statement.

Alicent stepped closer.

"You think coin buys loyalty?"

Rose's voice lowered.

"No. Hunger does."

Silence stretched.

Two different queens in spirit, if not in crown.

"You serve a man exiled from court," Alicent said.

Rose corrected her softly:

"He was not exiled."

"He was repositioned."

Alicent understood then.

This was no reckless outsider.

This was strategy given flesh.

"You underestimate us," Alicent warned.

Rose's answer was calm.

"And you underestimate him."

They parted.

But the air between factions had turned electric.

The Realm Now

• The prince's dragon egg has failed

• Alicent's confidence shaken — but pride intact

• Rhaenyra and Rose form cautious alliance

• Royal Hunt solidifies Rhaenyra's strength

• Marriage negotiations intensify

• The Greens begin viewing the guild network as threat

The Dance edges closer.

Not through swords.

Through symbols.
