Chapter 18 - Chapter 18: Do Your Analysis Before the Race

"The White Lily Stakes?"

"Yes." Takayama Gamu tapped the newly ordered blackboard and spoke to the two horse girls, who were already geared up for gravity-room training. "June 13th. Hanshin Racecourse. Turf, 2000 meters. Purse: 13 million yen."

Today was May 30th.

"In other words, we have fourteen days to prepare."

Tamamo Cross clenched her fist. Smooth, defined muscle lines showed clearly along her slender, pale arm.

"I can't wait."

"This time, I'm definitely going to win, Trainer Gamu!"

Under Takayama Gamu's control, the daily gravity-room sessions squeezed every last drop of stamina from her body—right to the limit. And the race analysis that followed had forged Tamamo Cross's ability to command a race into something she'd never had before.

The grueling training brought an overwhelming sense of fulfillment—something she had never felt back when she trained alone.

Precise data. Visible progress.

Tamamo Cross could clearly feel the subtle changes happening in her body day after day. Just as Trainer Gamu had said—I will teach you how to win—she was walking step by step along the road to victory he had laid out for her.

First place was in sight—almost close enough to grab.

A profound sense of security filled her chest. She barely had to plan anything herself anymore. As long as she followed Trainer Gamu's instructions, she would improve. Every problem, every hardship—Trainer Gamu would solve it all…

So admirable. So reassuring.

And I'm a horse girl acknowledged by Trainer Gamu. In that case, how could I possibly not take a mere Open-class race?

I'll dedicate this victory to Trainer Gamu!!

"Four opponents in this race are worth paying attention to," Takayama Gamu said. "Pal—display them."

"Understood, Gamu."

Pal projected the profiles of four horse girls onto the wall.

"Top favorite: Silk Maria (シルクマリア). Winner of the Tango Sho and the Bodhi Tree Special—both by huge margins. Her strength is a classic frontrunner/pace-stalker style."

"Second favorite: Daikatsu Kenzan (ダイカツケンザン). She's run three G3s in a row—Pegasus Stakes, Mainichi Hai, Kyoto Classic-Year Special—and placed second in all three. Basically, she's a solid G3-level horse girl. Also a pace-stalker type."

"Third favorite: Dokanjo (ドウカンジョー). Raw ability is average, but her race management is the best in the field. Hochi Cup: 5th. Oka Sho: 8th. Sankei Cup: 6th. Oaks: 12th. She's a veteran who's constantly jumping into graded races. Her style is a late runner—closing from the back."

"Seventh favorite: Play Guide Bird (プレイガイドバード). She just won Maya S and Kōgo Special using a 'Great Escape' strategy—blazing pace right from the start. Her numbers are average, but she's still a potential threat."

Takayama Gamu gestured at the projection and continued.

"Today, we can pause gravity-room training. Pal will send you the past race data and footage for these four. Today's assignment is to analyze their running styles and tactics yourselves—and propose countermeasures."

"Treat it as a small test of your skills. Don't worry about making mistakes."

He sounded relaxed.

"They're not especially strong opponents. I've already run a rough analysis once—Tamamo Cross's win probability is one hundred percent."

The only question was how many lengths she'd win by.

"I'll step out for a bit. If you need any materials, just ask Pal."

He slung a bag over his shoulder from the workbench, gave them a quick reminder, and left the training room.

"…"

"Ogre, don't zone out."

Tamamo Cross poked her head up from behind a stack of white papers and looked at Oguri Cap, who was holding a pencil with lifeless eyes.

"I'm sleepy…" Oguri Cap slumped onto the desk like a cat sunbathing.

If she saw too many dense blocks of text, she got tired. Sleepy.

Even though Takayama Gamu had always been teaching Oguri Cap race analysis, anything too theoretical went straight over her head. She understood how to run, and when to run—but if you asked her for deeper explanations, she couldn't give them.

In other words, she ran by instinct—and Takayama Gamu didn't oppose that.

Because Oguri Cap and Tamamo Cross had different personalities, Takayama Gamu trained their race-analysis skills differently as well. Tamamo Cross strengthened her analytical ability through large amounts of theory, learning to make the most appropriate decisions. Oguri Cap, on the other hand, sharpened her instincts by making rapid decisions in countless timed simulation races.

Trainer Gamu will analyze everything for me. I just have to run.

That was how reliable Takayama Gamu was—so reliable it made you want to shut off your brain completely and lean on him with your whole heart.

If the world were ending tomorrow, Oguri Cap felt that standing beside Takayama Gamu would be the safest place on earth.

"Just run…" Oguri Cap murmured unconsciously, her gaze locking onto the foam box that could accelerate plant growth.

She'd once asked Trainer Gamu why that box could make carrots sprout instantly. He'd said something about quantum mechanics. Oguri Cap, of course, had no idea what that meant—but because Trainer Gamu told her to keep it secret, she hadn't told anyone about the invention.

As payment, Takayama Gamu allowed Oguri Cap to use the foam box freely to grow things.

I want to eat something.

She pulled a small bag of seeds from the pocket at her waist.

"Ogre—this is a test! You have to give it everything!" Tamamo Cross clearly didn't approve of that attitude. She was completely fired up; faint crackling sounds like static electricity seemed to pop around her.

"This is the first test Trainer Gamu has ever given us! We have to complete it perfectly!"

"Okay…"

Oguri Cap picked up the materials and tried to study seriously.

"Zzz…"

Oguri Cap fell asleep.

"Gah—Ogre! Your drool is soaking the papers!!"

...

"Manhattan Cafe… who is that?"

Takayama Gamu pointed at something humanoid—possibly a horse girl—crawling across the floor in a gloomy, unsettling way, and spoke in a tone that was… not very polite.

"Because I didn't bring her food in time, she's probably starving to death." Manhattan Cafe shook her head regretfully and handed a packaged meal from the cafeteria to the crawling figure. "That's Agnes Tachyon."

"Do not drink anything that passes through her hands," Manhattan Cafe said solemnly.

"If you don't want to start glowing all over."
