Chapter 36 - The Last Descent

The vineyard stretched endlessly around them, wet leaves brushing against their clothes as they ran.

Behind them—

Shouts.

Footsteps.

They were being followed.

"Faster!" Daniel urged.

Elena's lungs burned, but she didn't stop.

She couldn't.

Ahead, partially hidden beneath overgrown vines and broken stone, Daniel spotted it—

A low, crumbling entrance.

Half buried.

The mouth of another tunnel.

"There!" he shouted.

They reached it just as a voice echoed behind them—

"Stop!"

Elena didn't turn.

Daniel pushed aside the loose wooden boards covering the entrance.

"Inside!" he said.

They slipped into the darkness just as footsteps reached the edge behind them.

The tunnel swallowed them whole.

Cold.

Silent.

Familiar.

Elena's heart pounded as Daniel turned on the flashlight again.

"We're back…" she whispered.

But this time-

They weren't searching for the truth.

They were running for their lives.

Behind them, light flickered as their pursuers entered the tunnel.

"They're coming in," Isabella said.

Daniel didn't hesitate.

"This way."

He led them through a narrower passage, one that twisted sharply and dipped lower into the earth.

Water still dripped from the ceiling.

The storm hadn't fully drained yet.

"Where does this lead?" Elena asked.

Daniel's voice was tight.

"Toward the central chamber."

Elena's breath caught.

Lucia's chamber.

The place where everything began.

"No," she said. "We can't go back there—"

"We don't have a choice," Daniel replied.

The tunnel opened slightly ahead.

A familiar space.

The broken wall.

The chamber.

But something was different now.

Part of the ceiling had collapsed further.

Rocks and debris scattered across the floor.

And the chamber itself—

Was unstable.

Cracking.

Shifting.

As if the entire underground system was beginning to give way.

Daniel slowed.

"This place isn't going to hold much longer."

Behind them, voices echoed closer.

They were almost there.

Elena looked around desperately.

"There has to be another exit!"

Daniel scanned the walls quickly.

Then—

He saw it.

A narrow passage behind the collapsed section.

Half-hidden.

Barely visible.

"There," he said. "That might lead out."

But before they could move—

A voice filled the chamber.

Cold.

Familiar.

"You always run toward the truth… don't you?"

They turned.

Mayor Bellini stood at the tunnel entrance.

Alone.

But this time—

He wasn't calm.

His eyes were sharp.

Focused.

Dangerous.

"This ends here," he said.

The chamber trembled slightly as another crack split across the ceiling.

Dust fell around them.

The ground itself seemed ready to collapse.

Elena stepped forward despite the danger.

"No," she said. "This ends with the truth."

Bellini's expression darkened.

"Truth doesn't matter if no one lives to tell it."

The tunnel groaned loudly.

Stone shifted.

Time was running out.

And now—

There was nowhere left to run.
