Shirley Thorne fought back the urge to gag and said, her heart aching, "Aunt Rowan, you get some rest. I'm going to take care of that old hag. I'll make absolutely sure she never gets a chance to come near you again!"

Meredith Rowan smiled in satisfaction—a genuine, heartfelt smile.

"Thank you, Miss Thorne!"

Shirley Thorne shook her head, gave a casual smile, and hopped down from the ambulance.

The moment she was on the ground, her sweet smile vanished completely.

'Meredith Rowan, you've crossed the line with me!'

'My sympathy doesn't come cheap!'

"Audrey told me."

Just as she was fuming, Ethan Grant's cool, clear voice reached her ears, inexplicably putting her at ease.

Shirley Thorne looked up to see Ethan Grant's tall figure looming over her, protective as a great tree.

"Mr. Grant."

She murmured, her voice utterly devoid of energy.

She probably didn't even realize it herself, but her voice was tinged with such grievance that it made one want to comfort her.
