Autumn planting in Porcupine Territory was over. Although the Baron had ordered the soil to be enriched with manure, feces were still a common sight on the roads.
The feces needed to be composted; applying fresh waste directly to the fields would burn the seedlings. The old cesspool by the main road had been mostly emptied, but the waste along the roadsides was still being ignored. Using manure was the Lord's command, and the people were merely following orders.
At present, no one understood the benefits of using manure as fertilizer.
That's right—Porcupine Territory didn't even have its own latrines. The villagers couldn't be bothered to build them, so they often just relieved themselves wherever they happened to be.
Luckily, the weather was getting colder. If it were summer, the smell... Tsk.
