"SPLASH..."
The scalding water hit her foot, and she recoiled, reflexively letting go...
"CRASH..."
The rest of the scalding water poured over her foot. Alaric Davenport had just reached the doorway when he saw her spill it.
She didn't even cry out, but the water had already turned her foot bright red.
Alaric Davenport immediately swept her up into his arms. His deep voice rumbled in her ear, "Why were you pouring water yourself? Where's the nurse?"
There was a hint of accusation in his tone.
She leaned into Alaric Davenport's arms, her voice tinged with grievance. "I sent her to go get something."
Alaric Davenport looked from Rosalind Lowell's red, scalded foot to her vacant eyes, and his heart ached all the more.
"I'm sorry, Rosalind Lowell."
Rosalind Lowell reached up and touched his face. "Why are you apologizing? I'm going to be fine."
"KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK..."
Alaric Davenport opened the door to find Rhoda Sterling.
