A Shifted World
The next few days felt… different.
Not loud.
Not sudden.
But quietly changing—like something slipping away without making a sound.
At the University
Katrina stood near the corridor, her eyes unconsciously searching for Ethan.
Usually—
He would already be there.
Waiting.
Or at least… noticing her.
But today—
He was somewhere else.
Across the campus, near the basketball court, laughter echoed.
Ethan.
Standing with Eric and his group.
For the first time, he wasn't standing on the side.
He wasn't quiet.
He wasn't distant.
He was… laughing.
Katrina paused.
Katrina (thinking):
He looks… different.
Ethan
"Come on, man!" Eric laughed, throwing an arm around his shoulder.
"You're finally becoming interesting."
Jackson added, smirking,
"Yeah, not that boring guy anymore."
Ethan laughed softly.
Not forced.
Not hesitant.
It felt… good.
For once—
He wasn't the quiet one in the corner.
He wasn't invisible.
Ethan (thinking):
Maybe Jessica was right…
Maybe I needed to change.
From a distance, Katrina watched.
Something about it felt… unfamiliar.
Not wrong.
Just… unfamiliar.
In Class
Ethan walked in with Eric's group.
Not alone.
Not looking around for Katrina.
Katrina noticed.
She smiled softly, expecting him to at least look at her.
But—
He didn't.
He went straight to his seat with the others.
Katrina's smile faded—just a little.
During the lecture
Ethan was distracted—but not in the old way.
Before, his thoughts were always about Katrina.
Now—
He was whispering, passing comments, laughing quietly with the group.
Once—
He glanced at Katrina.
Just once.
But quickly looked away.
Break Time
Katrina waited.
Near the corridor.
Like she always did.
Minutes passed.
He didn't come.
Instead—
She saw him walking with Eric and others, heading toward the cafeteria.
Without even noticing her.
Katrina (thinking):
Maybe… he didn't see me.
She told herself that.
Even when something inside her said otherwise.
Cafeteria
Ethan sat with Eric's group.
Laughter. Noise. Energy.
It felt… exciting.
Different from the calm moments he had with Katrina.
Eric leaned closer.
"See? This is life."
Ethan smiled.
Yeah.
It did feel like something new.
Something… addictive.
Across the room
Katrina sat with Ella and Arice.
Her eyes drifted toward Ethan.
Again.
And again.
Arice noticed.
"You've been looking at him for the last five minutes."
Katrina quickly looked away.
"No, I wasn't."
Ella, more observant, said softly—
"He's been busy lately."
Katrina forced a smile.
"Yeah… I guess."
But deep inside—
It didn't feel like "busy."
It felt like… distance.
Evening
Katrina stood on her balcony.
The sky was quiet.
The air felt still.
Across the street—
Ethan's room lights were on.
She waited.
Maybe he would call.
Maybe he would text.
Maybe… something.
Inside his room
Ethan sat with his phone.
Messages from Eric's group kept coming.
"Party tonight?"
"Come bro, don't be boring again."
"Bring that new version of you."
Ethan smiled.
For the first time—
He wasn't being left out.
His phone screen lit up again.
Katrina.
Calling.
He looked at it.
For a moment—
He hesitated.
Then…
He muted it.
Ethan (thinking):
I'll call her later…
But he didn't.
Katrina
Her phone slowly went silent.
She stared at it.
Waiting.
Nothing.
Katrina (thinking):
Maybe… he's busy.
She placed the phone down.
But this time—
The silence felt heavier than before.
Across the street
Ethan laughed at another message.
Katrina looked at his window.
Both in the same place.
Both under the same sky.
But somehow—
Further than ever.
And slowly—
Without either of them realizing—
Something pure…
Something simple…
Was starting to change.
