Chapter 92 - Chapter 92: Checking In

The winter air was sharp and unforgiving as Luis and Federick approached the farm. Frost covered the ground in a thin, uneven layer, and the once fertile fields were now completely barren. No crops remained, only hardened soil, fenced boundaries, and reinforced structures that had been strengthened over time to withstand both the environment and the threats beyond.

Every step they took crunched softly against the frozen earth, the silence of the surroundings emphasizing how much the world had changed.

As they reached the perimeter, the guards quickly recognized them and signaled their arrival. After a brief verification, the heavy gate slowly opened, allowing them entry.

Inside, the farm carried a quieter, more restrained atmosphere than before. With no crops to maintain, the survivors had shifted their focus entirely to rationing supplies, maintaining defenses, and preserving what remained. Movements were efficient and purposeful, reflecting a disciplined effort to endure the harsh conditions of winter.

Luis carried several containers of food supplies with him, carefully packed provisions taken from the bunker. These were meant to support Pablo's group during this difficult season.

Federick walked beside him, observing the surroundings with a calm but attentive gaze.

They were not kept waiting long. Pablo approached them, his expression immediately easing upon seeing Luis.

"Luis," Pablo greeted.

Luis nodded in return. "Pablo."

There was no need for introductions between them. Pablo and his family were already familiar with Luis, having met him before at the farm when he had previously visited with Mia. The familiarity remained despite the changes in the world, allowing the interaction to remain natural and direct.

Luis placed the containers down near the entrance. "We brought supplies."

Pablo glanced at the containers, then nodded. "We appreciate it. Winter has been difficult."

At that moment, Pablo shifted his attention toward the man standing beside Luis.

Federick stepped forward slightly, his presence calm and composed.

"I'm Federick Ray," he said.

Pablo gave a respectful nod. "We know. Chairman of Aetherion Lands & Holdings… or former chairman, rather."

Federick acknowledged it with a slight nod. "That's correct. I've stepped down. Luis is handling things now."

From nearby, Pablo's family, already aware of Luis, observed the exchange quietly. Their focus, however, naturally turned toward Federick, whose name carried weight even before the collapse.

Leon, Pablo's father, stepped forward and extended a hand.

"Leon," he introduced himself. "Pablo's father."

Federick shook his hand firmly. "Federick Ray."

Leon nodded. "It's not often we meet someone like you in person."

Federick responded calmly, "These days, titles don't mean much. Survival does."

Leon gave a small, approving nod at that.

After the brief exchange, the group settled into a more relaxed formation near the entrance, keeping themselves within the shelter while still close to the cold air outside.

Luis turned back to Pablo. "How are things holding up here?"

Pablo exhaled lightly. "We're managing. No crops during winter, so everything depends on stored supplies and careful rationing."

Luis nodded. "We brought additional food. It should help you get through the season."

Pablo glanced at the containers again. "That helps more than you know."

Leon crossed his arms slightly, then spoke. "The cold isn't the only problem we've been dealing with."

Luis's expression turned more focused. "Mutated infected?"

Pablo nodded. "Yes."

Federick, who had been quietly observing, now joined the conversation. "Tell me what you've observed."

Pablo took a moment before answering.

"They're not like the usual infected. They don't just react, they assess."

Luis added, "We've seen the same. They coordinate… or at least behave as if they do."

Leon's tone followed, grounded but serious. "The first time we encountered one, it didn't rush us immediately. It circled… watched our formation."

Pablo continued, "Then it struck when we were most vulnerable. It targeted the weakest link instead of attacking randomly."

Federick's eyes narrowed slightly. "So they adapt based on structure."

Pablo nodded. "Exactly. And they don't hesitate. Once they find a weakness, they exploit it quickly."

Luis crossed his arms, thinking. "We encountered one that behaved similarly. It felt less like facing an infected… and more like facing something that could think."

Leon let out a slow breath. "That's what worries us. Regular infected are dangerous because of numbers. These… are dangerous because of intent."

A brief silence followed as the weight of the discussion settled over the group.

Federick finally spoke, his tone measured. "If they continue to evolve like this, isolated defenses like farms will become more vulnerable over time."

Pablo nodded. "That's why we've been reinforcing our perimeter and keeping rotations tight. We can't afford blind spots anymore."

Luis looked at Pablo. "If you encounter more of them or if things escalate, let us know. We'll help however we can."

Pablo met his gaze. "We will."

The cold wind brushed past the outer fence, a quiet reminder that the threat outside was still present, still evolving.

And now, better understood.
