Chapter 95 - Chapter 95: A Rare Peace

The bunker felt calmer than usual that evening, as if the entire place had agreed to slow down for a while. The usual movement in the corridors was still there, but softer, more relaxed. Lights glowed warmly in the dining area, where the long table had already been set for dinner.

Helen finished arranging the last of the dishes while Olivia helped place the utensils neatly. Michael was already seated, watching with a quiet, approving expression. Federick arrived shortly after, taking his seat with his usual composed posture. One by one, the others followed.

Luis entered first, glancing around the room before stepping aside to allow Mia to walk in beside him. Their arrival didn't draw attention in an exaggerated way, it was simply acknowledged, like everyone else's.

"Dinner's ready," Helen said with a gentle smile.

"Smells good," Luis replied as he took his seat.

Mia sat across from him, quietly observing the table before her gaze settled on the people around her. There was no urgency in her expression tonight, only a calm awareness.

Everyone began serving themselves. The atmosphere remained light, with small movements of utensils and the soft sound of conversation starting to build.

Michael was the first to speak. "It's good to sit together like this."

Helen nodded. "We don't get moments like this often anymore."

Olivia smiled slightly as she looked around the table. "It feels… normal."

Federick let out a quiet breath. "Normal is something we should hold onto when we can."

Luis picked up his utensils, glancing briefly at Mia before speaking. "Agreed. It helps reset the mind."

Mia responded calmly, "Routines like this keep things balanced."

Olivia looked toward Mia. "You've been very busy lately. Are you getting enough rest?"

Mia paused slightly before answering. "I manage."

Luis added, "She doesn't overstate things, but she's been handling a lot."

Helen gave Mia a soft look. "Still, don't forget to take care of yourself."

Mia gave a small nod. "I will."

Michael turned slightly toward Luis. "How are things outside the bunker?"

Luis took a moment before replying. "Stable, for now. Patrols haven't reported anything unusual near the perimeter."

Federick followed up, "And the boundary?"

Luis answered, "Still the same. They stop at the same distance."

Olivia tilted her head slightly. "That's… reassuring."

Mia spoke quietly, "It's consistent."

Federick leaned back slightly in his chair. "Consistency is what matters. Whatever is happening out there, at least it hasn't changed that."

Helen placed a serving of food on her plate and looked around the table. "Then for tonight, we can just eat without worrying."

Michael nodded. "That's a good approach."

For a moment, the conversation shifted to smaller things. Olivia mentioned a small adjustment in the sleeping arrangements that had made things more comfortable for some of the members. Helen shared how the hydroponic produce had improved in taste. Michael commented on a minor maintenance update that had gone smoothly earlier that day.

Luis listened as he ate, occasionally adding short responses when needed. Mia remained quiet for a while, simply listening to the flow of conversation, her attention moving naturally from one speaker to another.

At one point, Olivia looked at Mia again. "Do you ever feel like things are… quieter than before?"

Mia thought for a moment before answering. "Not quieter. Just more controlled."

Olivia smiled faintly. "That sounds like you."

Luis glanced at Mia, a slight hint of understanding in his expression. "Controlled isn't a bad thing."

Federick added, "It means we've adapted."

Michael took a slow sip of his drink before speaking. "Adaptation is what has kept us alive this long."

Helen gave a small, reassuring nod. "And it's what will continue to keep us together."

The group fell into a comfortable rhythm of conversation again. No one raised their voice. No one rushed their words. It felt natural, as if the weight of the outside world had been set aside, even if only temporarily.

Luis leaned slightly back in his chair. "We should do this more often."

Olivia smiled. "I'd like that."

Michael agreed. "As long as we can make the time, it's worth continuing."

Federick added, "Moments like this strengthen more than just morale."

Helen looked around the table, her expression warm. "It reminds us why we're doing all of this."

Mia listened quietly, her gaze briefly resting on each person. There was something steady in the room, not just in the structure around them, but in the people themselves.

After a while, Olivia stood slightly to help with passing a dish. "Here, let me."

Luis reached to assist, and for a brief moment, their hands moved in coordination before the item was placed where it needed to be.

Small gestures like that continued throughout the meal—simple, natural interactions without overthinking.

As the conversation slowly began to wind down, Federick was the first to finish his meal. He set down his utensils and looked around the table.

"That was good," he said.

Michael nodded in agreement. "Yes, it was."

Helen smiled, clearly satisfied. "I'm glad everyone enjoyed it."

Olivia began gathering a few of the dishes. "I'll help clean up."

Luis stood as well. "I'll assist."

Mia followed shortly after, not needing to be asked.

The table gradually cleared as everyone helped in their own way. The room became quieter again, filled only with the soft sounds of plates being moved and water being prepared for cleaning.

At one point, Olivia glanced at Mia and Luis with a light smile. "It's nice seeing you both like this."

Luis raised a brow slightly. "Like what?"

"Just… normal," Olivia replied.

Mia didn't respond immediately, but her expression remained calm.

Luis let out a small breath, almost like a quiet chuckle. "I'll take that as a good thing."

Helen, overhearing, added gently, "It is."

Michael looked toward Mia briefly. "You've all done well to keep things steady."

Mia replied simply, "We're maintaining what we built."

Federick nodded. "And that's not easy."

As the last of the dishes were gathered, the atmosphere remained relaxed. No one rushed to leave, but the evening naturally reached its end.

Luis stood beside Mia for a moment as the others moved about. "Ready?"

Mia nodded. "Yes."

There was no urgency in their steps as they left the dining area. Behind them, the quiet sounds of cleanup continued, along with occasional light conversation.

The bunker returned to its usual rhythm, but something about the evening lingered differently, not as a moment of strategy or survival, but as something simpler.

A shared meal.

A shared pause.

And for a brief time, a reminder that even in their world, calm moments still existed.
