Chapter 102 - Chapter 102: What Shouldn't Have Happened

The bunker felt different that day.Not unsafe. Not unstable. Just… unsettled.

The air inside carried a quiet weight, the kind that followed something unexpected, something that didn't fit into what they already understood. People moved as usual. Systems ran without issue. The structure held steady. But beneath it all, there was a shift no one could ignore.

Mia sat at the table in the main living area, her posture straight, hands resting lightly in front of her. Across from her, Luis stood beside Federick, while Olivia leaned slightly against the back of her chair. Michael sat quietly, his expression thoughtful, and Helen remained close to Mia, her attention fixed on her daughter. Ruth stood near the edge of the room, silent, watching everyone with careful eyes.

They had all gathered for one reason.

"What exactly happened out there?" Federick asked.

His voice was calm, but direct.

Luis answered first. "We were doing a routine check. North side of the perimeter. Everything was normal at first."

Mia continued without hesitation. "We found animal tracks. Fresh. Too direct to be random movement."

Michael frowned slightly. "Animal?"

"Yes," Mia said. "A wolf."

Ruth's head lifted slightly at that.

Luis added, "It approached us without hesitation. No fear. No caution."

Mia's gaze sharpened. "It was infected."

The word settled heavily in the room.

Helen's hand tightened slightly on the edge of the table. "An animal… infected?"

"Yes," Mia said.

Silence followed.

Ruth spoke next, her voice quieter than usual. "I've never seen that before."

Mia nodded. "Neither have I."

Luis crossed his arms slightly. "It moved differently. Not just aggression. It was focused."

Federick looked between them. "And then?"

Luis glanced briefly at Mia before answering.

"It attacked."

Helen inhaled sharply.

Michael leaned forward slightly. "And you got away?"

Mia shook her head once. "Not by ourselves."

Ruth frowned. "What do you mean?"

There was a brief pause.

Then Luis said it clearly.

"Felix."

The name alone changed the atmosphere.

Ruth froze.

"…Felix?" she repeated.

Mia nodded. "He intervened."

Ruth stared at her, clearly trying to process it. "He… what?"

"He attacked the wolf," Luis said. "Pulled it away from us."

Ruth blinked, her expression shifting from confusion to disbelief. "He… helped you?"

"Yes."

For a moment, Ruth said nothing.

She looked down slightly, her thoughts moving quickly. "…That doesn't make sense."

"It does," Mia said quietly.

Ruth looked back at her.

Mia continued, "He's been controlling the infected around the bunker for a while now. This is just… a more direct version of that."

"But this is different," Ruth said. "He didn't just control it. He physically stopped it."

Luis nodded once. "Exactly."

Ruth let out a slow breath, still stunned. "I knew he wasn't like the others. But this…"

She didn't finish the sentence.

Helen suddenly reached for Mia's arm, her expression filled with concern. "Are you alright?"

Mia looked at her calmly. "I'm fine."

Helen searched her face carefully, as if trying to confirm it for herself. "It was close, wasn't it?"

Mia didn't deny it. "…Yes."

Helen's expression tightened slightly. "You shouldn't be out there."

Mia said nothing at first.

Helen continued, her voice softer but firm. "Let the men handle the outside checks. There's no need for you to take that kind of risk."

The room went quiet.

Luis didn't interrupt.

Federick didn't either.

Mia looked at her mother, her expression steady but not dismissive. "I understand your concern."

"That's not an answer," Helen said gently.

Mia held her gaze. "We don't have the luxury of separating roles like that anymore. Everyone needs to be aware of what's happening outside."

Helen's eyes softened, but the worry didn't fade. "You're still my daughter."

Mia's expression shifted just slightly at that.

"…I know," she said quietly.

A pause.

Then she added, "I'll be more careful next time."

Helen studied her for a moment, then gave a small nod. It wasn't full agreement but it was acceptance.

Luis spoke then, his voice calm. "We'll adjust patrol structure."

Everyone looked at him.

"From now on," he continued, "no one goes out alone. Minimum two people. Full awareness of surroundings at all times."

Federick nodded. "Agreed."

Michael added, "And we expand observation zones."

Mia leaned back slightly. "We also need to reconsider our assumptions."

Ruth looked at her. "About what?"

Mia answered simply. "The infected."

Silence followed again.

Luis understood immediately. "Animals."

Mia nodded. "If one animal is infected, others can be too."

Ruth frowned. "That changes everything."

"Yes," Mia said. "Animals move differently. Faster. Less predictable. They don't follow the same patterns as human infected."

Federick crossed his arms. "That increases risk significantly."

Michael added, "Especially in the forest."

Luis looked toward the corridor leading to the bunker exit. "We'll need to be more careful with every movement outside."

Helen exhaled slowly. "So even the forest isn't safe anymore."

"It never was," Mia said.

Helen didn't argue.

Ruth stepped forward slightly, her expression more focused now. "What about Felix?"

Everyone looked at her.

Ruth continued, "If he attacked the wolf… does that mean he's protecting the area?"

Mia answered carefully. "He's maintaining something."

Luis nodded. "A boundary."

Ruth hesitated. "Then why stop the wolf directly? He usually doesn't act like that."

Mia's eyes lowered slightly in thought. "…Because it crossed a line."

"What line?" Ruth asked.

Mia looked back up.

"The same one that keeps the infected away from the bunker."

The room went quiet again.

Luis added, "The wolf ignored it."

Federick's expression hardened slightly. "Which means not everything is under his control."

"Yes," Mia said.

Ruth let out a slow breath. "So now we have intelligent infected… and infected animals that might not follow the same rules."

"Correct," Mia said.

Helen shook her head slightly. "That's… worse than before."

No one disagreed.

For a while, no one spoke.

The weight of the situation settled over them fully now.

Then Michael broke the silence. "We adapt."

Everyone looked at him.

"We always have," he continued. "This is no different."

Luis nodded once. "We'll update protocols today."

Federick added, "And expand monitoring coverage."

Ruth looked at Mia. "I'll review all external feeds again. If there are more signs, I'll find them."

Mia gave a small nod. "Good."

Helen looked at her daughter again, her expression softer now but still worried. "Just… be careful."

Mia met her gaze.

"I will."

And this time, it wasn't just reassurance.

It was a promise.

The meeting ended not long after that.

Everyone moved back to their roles, the bunker returning once again to its steady rhythm. But the calm from before had changed. It was sharper now. More aware.

More prepared.

Mia remained seated for a moment longer after the others left.

Luis stayed.

Neither of them spoke immediately.

Then Luis said quietly, "You handled that well."

Mia glanced at him. "It was straightforward."

"It wasn't."

A small pause.

Mia looked away slightly. "…We just have more variables now."

Luis nodded. "We'll adjust."

She didn't respond.

But she didn't disagree either.

After a moment, they both stood.

And without needing to say anything more, they returned to work.

Outside, the snow continued to melt.

And somewhere in the forest,

Something new had already begun.
