Chapter 7 - Shadows of the Past

The morning sunlight poured into Hartley Enterprises, reflecting off the sleek glass walls of the boardroom. Bella Hartley sat at the head of the long table, reviewing reports for an upcoming investor meeting. Her laptop pinged with a new email—one from Vincent Crawford, a name that made her stomach tighten.

Vincent was a longtime business rival, ambitious, cunning, and never afraid to use underhanded tactics to get ahead. He had tried numerous times to sabotage her projects, and his presence in any deal made her uneasy.

Bella opened the email. It contained an invitation—an exclusive networking event tonight, full of investors, donors, and media. At the bottom, in bold, Vincent's signature:

"Looking forward to seeing you there, Bella. Let's discuss business… and perhaps some opportunities for collaboration."

Bella clenched her fists. She hated the thought of dealing with him, but ignoring the event could affect her reputation and her company's growth. She exhaled slowly. "I have no choice."

Meanwhile, Ethan was running deliveries at the warehouse, finishing up early to catch a break. His phone buzzed—a message from Bella:

"Meet me tonight. It's… important. I'll explain everything."

Ethan's heart skipped. Important? His mind raced with possibilities. Was she in trouble? Was it work-related? Or… something about them?

He typed back quickly: "Okay. Tell me the place and time."

"Vincent Crawford's event. 8 p.m. The St. Regis ballroom."

Ethan paused. Vincent Crawford. He had heard whispers about Bella's rival in the news—ruthless, cunning, and relentless. He wasn't sure he belonged in a ballroom full of CEOs and investors. But he didn't hesitate. "I'll be there."

The evening arrived. St. Regis Ballroom gleamed with chandeliers, polished floors, and elegantly dressed guests. Bella arrived first, radiant in a midnight blue gown. Her confidence masked the tension she felt about Vincent and the upcoming interactions.

Ethan arrived shortly after, dressed in a simple black shirt and slacks. He immediately felt out of place amidst the sea of tailored suits and designer dresses. Yet when Bella's eyes met his across the room, he felt a wave of calm. Somehow, being with her made him feel grounded, even here.

Vincent Crawford approached, a sly smile on his face. "Bella, always a pleasure," he said smoothly. "And… who's this?"

"This is Ethan," Bella replied, her tone polite but firm. "He's… a friend."

Vincent raised an eyebrow, his smile turning slightly wicked. "Friend, huh? Interesting. Well, I hope he understands the… world he's stepping into."

Ethan felt a prick of anger and embarrassment, but he remained silent, standing tall. Bella, noticing his discomfort, squeezed his hand gently under the table.

The evening progressed with speeches, networking, and champagne flowing. Vincent made several pointed remarks, subtly reminding Ethan of his "place" while praising Bella's business acumen in front of the crowd. Ethan's discomfort grew, but Bella remained composed, her hand never leaving his.

Finally, Vincent cornered Bella privately near the balcony. "You're wasting your time with him," he said coldly. "A CEO doesn't mix with someone… ordinary. Think carefully."

Bella's heart raced, but her gaze was steady. "Vincent, this isn't about business. And if you think you can dictate who I care about… you're wrong."

Vincent smirked, leaving her with a final warning: "Just remember, Bella… not everyone can handle the life you live."

Ethan, watching from inside, noticed Bella's unease. After Vincent walked away, he approached her. "Are you okay?" he asked quietly.

Bella smiled, though her eyes reflected tension. "I am now. Thank you for staying with me."

Ethan nodded. "I don't care about the world… or what anyone thinks. I care about you."

Bella's chest warmed at his words. For a moment, the grandeur, the rivalry, the judgment—all of it faded. Here, with him, everything felt real.

Later, walking back through the rain-soaked streets, Bella slipped her hand into Ethan's. "I don't know what the future holds… but I know I want you in it."

Ethan squeezed her hand. "Then we'll face it together."

The city lights reflected in puddles around them, like stars scattered across the streets. Their worlds were still different, their paths uncertain—but for the first time, neither cared. They were determined to fight for what was theirs: a love that refused to be constrained by wealth, status, or expectation.
