Synopsis
The kingdom demands a queen. The Crown Prince demands obedience. Lady Elowen Evermere desires neither. When the royal decree summons every noble daughter to compete for the hand of Crown Prince Kael Viremont, Elowen becomes collateral damage in a political game she never asked to play. Unlike her ambitious younger sister, she has no interest in crowns, alliances, or courtly power. She wants a quiet life; books, gardens, and peace. But peace has no place in Kael’s court. The prince is not searching for a bride. He is hunting for threats. Cold, calculating, and dangerously perceptive, Kael quickly sees through the polished smiles of the noble daughters. And the only one who does not try to impress him — the silent duke’s eldest daughter — becomes the most intriguing of all. Elowen wants to be invisible. Kael refuses to let her disappear. As political schemes tighten around the throne, alliances fracture, and betrayal blooms beneath silk gowns and golden chandeliers, the selection becomes something far darker than marriage. It becomes a battlefield. And in a war where hearts are weapons and affection is leverage, the most dangerous move of all may be falling in love.

Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: The Selection Decree

The decree arrived at dawn.

Not carried by a servant.

Not whispered by rumor.

But nailed to the iron gates of every noble estate in the kingdom.

"By order of the Crown, all eligible daughters of noble blood shall attend the Royal Selection at the Capital within one month's time."

The Duke of Evermere read the parchment twice. Behind him, his younger daughter, Lady Selene Evermere, clasped her hands to her chest.

"A Royal Selection…" she breathed.

"Father, this is it. This is our family's chance."

But near the rose window, seated quietly with a book in her lap, her older sister did not move. Lady Elowen Evermere turned a page.

The Duke exhaled slowly.

"Both of you are eligible."

Selene's smile widened.

Elowen's fingers tightened slightly against the page.

"I have no interest in court politics," Elowen said calmly. "Surely my presence is unnecessary."

The Duke's gaze hardened.

"This is not a request." Across the kingdom, carriages were already being prepared.

Because the Crown Prince had finally agreed to take a bride.

Or so the kingdom believed.
