Chapter 1 - The Echo of the Rain

The sky over the city had turned a bruised purple, heavy with the scent of upcoming rain. In a small, dimly lit studio apartment, the rhythmic tapping of the first few droplets against the glass pane was the only sound.

Aaryan stood by the window, watching the streetlights flicker to life. He wasn't expecting anyone, especially not tonight. But then, a sharp, insistent knock echoed through the room. When he opened the door, his breath hitched.

Standing there, drenched to the bone, was Kabir.

It had been three years since they last spoke—three years since the unspoken tension between them had reached a breaking point, leading to a silent goodbye. Kabir's leather jacket was slick with rain, and his dark hair was plastered against his forehead, droplets tracing the sharp line of his jaw.

"Aaryan," Kabir's voice was raspy, barely audible over the rising thunder. "My car broke down two blocks away. Yours was the only place I knew."

Aaryan stepped back, gesturing for him to enter. "You're freezing, Kabir. Come in."

As Kabir stepped inside, the small space suddenly felt much tighter. The air was thick with the smell of wet pavement and the familiar, woody scent of Kabir's cologne. Aaryan handed him a thick, grey towel. As their fingers brushed against the fabric, a literal spark seemed to jump between them.

Kabir froze, his eyes locking onto Aaryan's. The silence between them wasn't empty; it was heavy with everything they hadn't said—the late nights in college, the lingering glances, the fear of what being "more than friends" would mean.

"I didn't think you'd want to see me," Kabir whispered, stepping closer. The rain lashed against the window with renewed fury, sealing them away from the rest of the world.

Aaryan felt his heart hammering against his ribs. "I never said I didn't want to see you."

The flickering candlelight cast long, dancing shadows against the walls. Kabir reached out, his hand trembling slightly as he tucked a damp strand of hair behind Aaryan's ear. The touch was electric, a bridge being built over years of distance. In that moment, the rain outside didn't matter. The only thing that existed was the heat radiating between them in the quiet, shadowed room.
