Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: The Cold Empire of Evan Harper

Evan Harper sat at the head of his sleek, glass-topped desk, the golden city skyline sprawling beneath him. The sharp, cold light of dawn pierced through the floor-to-ceiling windows, casting long shadows across the room. His office, high above the city's chaos, felt like his fortress—a place where everything was controlled, where the noise of the world below seemed distant and unimportant.

He adjusted the cufflinks on his sleeve, the silver gleaming under the artificial light. Business was always top of mind. Everything in Evan's world was calculated—every deal, every decision, every movement. There was no room for mistakes. Not when you were the CEO of Harper Enterprises, a multi-billion-dollar empire built from the ground up. It had taken years of blood, sweat, and more sleepless nights than he could count. But it had paid off.

Or so he told himself.

Evan reached for his phone, scrolling through emails, his fingers moving swiftly over the screen. There was no time to waste. Even at this early hour, the work never stopped. A part of him wondered, not for the first time, if he was even capable of taking a break. He had no idea how to stop. The constant pursuit of success had become his only constant.

The truth was, Evan didn't know what peace was anymore.

His life had once been full of warmth—when he was younger, before the world had broken him. Before the fire had consumed everything. But now, there was only a cold, calculated drive. He had built an empire, yes. He had wealth, influence, everything most people only dreamed of. But he also had nothing that mattered. No friends. No real connections. No family, not really. Not anymore.

His mother had tried to keep him close, always pushing him to "live a little," to "find happiness beyond the spreadsheets." She'd died six months ago, a heart attack that came too suddenly, too unexpectedly.

Evan hadn't even cried.

He looked out the window for a moment, lost in thought. He was supposed to feel something, wasn't he? Grief, sadness... But all he felt was the hollow ache of emptiness, something he'd gotten used to over the years.

His mother had been the last person who ever truly cared about him. His father had disappeared when he was just a child, leaving Evan with nothing but a trail of debts and a family legacy to pick up. Evan had learned early on that love was a luxury. And luxury wasn't for people like him.

Evan had long stopped trying to figure out who he really was beneath the suits and polished boardrooms. His identity had been consumed by the company he inherited—the relentless expectations of others, the weight of a name that carried too much history. The name of Harper. It was more of a burden than a privilege.

"Mr. Harper, your 9 o'clock meeting is ready," his assistant's voice crackled through the intercom, pulling him from his thoughts.

"Send them in," Evan replied, his voice smooth, without a hint of emotion.

The door opened with a quiet creak, and two men walked in. They were businessmen from a rival firm—flankers in a never-ending game of corporate chess. They came to discuss a potential merger, but Evan had already made up his mind.

He didn't trust them.

But that didn't matter. He was a master of pretending. He had always been good at pretending. He could play the part of the perfect businessman, the cold, calculating CEO who never let personal emotions interfere with his decisions.

The meeting went exactly as expected. He played his role flawlessly, nodding when required, offering vague but polite responses. There were no words wasted. No small talk. Everything was about the deal, and nothing else.

After an hour, the meeting ended. He stood up, offering a handshake to the two men before they left.

Alone again, Evan sank back into his chair. He stared at the stacks of papers that cluttered his desk—financial reports, investment proposals, and legal contracts. A thousand decisions, all crucial, all waiting to be made.

A soft ding from his phone interrupted his thoughts. Another email. Another investor. Another potential partnership. His empire was growing, expanding at an alarming rate. And yet, for all the wealth and power he had accumulated, he couldn't shake the sense of being stuck—caught in a cycle that he couldn't break.

He wasn't happy. He wasn't even close. But he didn't know how to stop. How to escape the prison he'd built for himself.

Evan leaned back in his chair and rubbed his temples. The familiar, dull ache of exhaustion gnawed at him. He hadn't slept properly in weeks, his mind always racing, always thinking of the next move, the next big deal.

He missed his mother more than he cared to admit. She had been the only person who had ever understood him. She had never asked for anything—never expected anything beyond his love, which was a concept Evan had long ago abandoned.

A knock at the door broke his moment of vulnerability.

"Mr. Harper?" His assistant peeked her head inside. "There's someone here to see you. A... potential investor."

Evan straightened up, snapping back into his business persona. His cold, unfeeling mask returned, and he nodded sharply. "Send them in."

The door opened once again, but this time, Evan's eyes didn't immediately fall on the man who entered. Instead, his gaze was focused on the tall glass windows across the room, the bright sun casting long shadows over the city below.

For a brief moment, he wondered if this was all there was to life. The meetings, the deals, the endless chase for success that never seemed to end. He wondered if it was possible to feel anything again. Anything real.

But that was a question for another time. Another life.

"Mr. Harper," the voice interrupted his thoughts. Evan looked up sharply, his gaze falling on the figure who had entered.
