(MASON'S POV)
The bathroom door clicked shut behind me, and I let the echo chase me down the hallway like a ghost I couldn't outrun. Victor's easy smile and that casual "See you in class" still buzzed in my ears, but I shoved it down deep. 'Quiet day,' I told myself, fists clenched at my sides. 'Uneventful. Invisible. Just slip back into the shadows where you belong, Mason. No more spotlights. No more questions.'
Back in class I slid into my seat at the back of the classroom, shoulders hunched, notebook already open like armor. The girls from earlier were whispering in a tight knot two rows over, but before they could swarm again, the door swung open and Mr. Charles strode in, briefcase thumping against his leg.
"Settle down, everyone," he called, voice booming with that no-nonsense authority that always dissolve any chaos just by hearing it. "I said settle. We have four new students joining us today, and I expect you to make them feel welcome."
