Chapter 56 - Waiting

(BLUE'S POV)

Trees, streetlights—everything melted into streaks of green and shadow as I sped back to school at vampire speed.

I got to the school parking lot, entered my car and drove off. By the time I stepped through the front door, I was already moving with purpose.

No—with obsession.

I headed straight for the kitchen. Steel flashed beneath the lights as I grabbed a knife, the blade glinting in my hand.

Vegetables hit the cutting board in neat rows. The knife moved faster than human eyes could track.

Tak. Tak. Tak. Tak.

Perfect slices. Bell peppers. Onions. Fresh herbs. Garlic. The sharp, rich scent of it filled the air as I crushed cloves beneath the flat of the blade.

A thick steak hit the cast-iron pan with a violent hiss. The sound filled the room. Oil cracked. Butter melted. Rosemary and garlic sizzled, releasing a rich, mouthwatering aroma that curled through the house.

The kitchen began to smell warm.

Safe. Like home. Like something Mason deserved.
