"Alicia, we were married for two years. How can you say you never felt even the slightest feelings for me?"
She let out a short, bitter laugh.
"Was I the only one in that marriage? You spent those same two years in love with someone else. Why should I have been the one to fall for you?"
I closed my eyes and rubbed my chin, feeling more helpless than I ever had before.
Reaching for her hand, I held it gently.
"I don't know how else to convince you. I know I made countless mistakes, but you have to believe me when I say that when I close my eyes, I see only you. You're the person I want beside me. The one who can turn my world upside down with a single word."
For the first time, her composure faltered.
"Then answer me this," she said softly. "When did you start loving me?"
I had expected the question.
I simply didn't have the answer.
She saw my hesitation and smiled—a small, mocking smile that seemed directed more at herself than at me.
